A major international crossing over the St. Clair River at the southern end of Lake Huron, Blue Water Bridge is located between Port Huron, Michigan and Point Edward, Ontario. When it fully opened to traffic during the fall of 1938, it became one of the fastest links between the Midwest and Ontario as well as the Northeast United States.

The (original) Blue Water Bridge is a cantilever truss bridge. Its total length is 6,178 feet; its main span is 871 feet long. The bridge was built as a joint...

Hotshot cargo flights bypass US-Canada border blockade to deliver auto parts

A white USA Jet cargo jet with twin-engines on the tail.

Automakers and major suppliers have called in hotshot air cargo services to airlift critical parts to facilities on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border because of the protest blocking the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

Manufacturers regularly use air freight companies that specialize in cross-border hops for emergency transport, but the activity has ramped up in recent days as protesters continued to choke off the largest commercial crossing in North America. The...

5 burning questions: Vaccine mandates for cross-border trucking

ansport trucks pass under a "Bridge To USA" at the entrance to the Ambassador Bridge, US-Canada border crossing.

Starting on Saturday, the cross-border trucking community faces the first stage of vaccine mandates. The Canadian government is implementing its restrictions first. U.S. truckers will only be able to cross the border if they can show proof that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Meanwhile, unvaccinated or partially vaccinated Canadian truckers face testing and quarantines. A week later, on Jan. 22, the U.S. is expected to implement a similar policy on its borders with Canada and...

Interstate 35 (I-35) serves the central United States. As with most interstate highways that end in a “5,” it is a major cross-country, north-south route. I-35 runs from Laredo, Texas, near the Mexican border to Duluth, Minnesota, near the Canadian border.

I-35 was designated by the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO; now AASHTO) on August 14, 1957, as an original interstate highway from Laredo north to Duluth.

Ambassador Bridge shut down after possible explosives found

Trucks cross the Ambassador Bridge, a suspension bridge, seen from below.

Police shut down the Ambassador Bridge after authorities discovered possible explosives in a vehicle on Monday morning in a major disruption at the busiest commercial vehicle crossing linking the United States and Canada.

Windsor police began allowing U.S.-bound traffic to resume, with limited access, shortly before 1:30 p.m. Monday. The incident led to long backups for trucks attempting to enter the U.S. from Canada, as traffic was rerouted to the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Blue Water Bridge.

What will the reopening of the Canadian border mean for freight?

An aerial view of the U.S.-Canada border. The Canadian side is set to reopen for non-essential travel.

Canada is beginning to reopen its borders for nonessential travel after a 16-month shutdown in response to COVID-19. Starting Aug. 9, fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents can enter the country.

Even though trade has been exempt from the restrictions — allowing trucks to move freely between Canada and the U.S. — the reopening of the border still has significant implications for freight. And not just because more congestion and wait times will undoubtedly accompany the return of...

In the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, numerous changes were made at federal agencies. For example, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was founded on November 25, 2002. Among the agencies that are part of DHS is the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, or CBP.

CBP became the first comprehensive border security agency in the U.S. on March 1, 2003. The agency’s focus is to maintain the integrity of the nation’s boundaries and ports of entry.
