The U.S.-Canada border will remain closed for nonessential travel until Aug. 21 after both governments agreed to extend the restriction by 30 days to curb the spread of COVID-19, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday.

Today, Canada and the United States have agreed to extend the temporary restriction of all non-essential travel across the Canada-US border by one month, until August 21st.

The U.S. and Canada appear poised to extend the closure of their shared border for nonessential travel until Aug. 21. It will give truckers an additional 30 days of crossing the border mostly free of passenger traffic.

Truck crossings from the U.S. to Canada reached a pre-COVID-19 level last week, suggesting that the cross-border freight recovery didn’t miss a beat during two national holidays and the implementation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on trade.

CBP finds 48 alleged stowaways in BNSF, UP trains at border

Officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently apprehended 48 people who allegedly sought to cross the U.S. border illegally from Mexico as stowaways on auto hauler rail cars operated by BNSF (NYSE: BRK) and Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP).

The number of trucks crossing the Canadian border from the U.S. surged last week as freight volumes surged in both countries.

The number of trucks crossing the U.S.-Canada border reached its highest level since late March, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) data shows.

Nearly 86,000 truckers entered Canada from the U.S. during the week ending May 31. That represents a decline of almost 22% compared to a year ago, the CBSA said late on Wednesday, June 3.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reported an uptick in truck drivers crossing to Canada from the U.S. last week. It’s another encouraging sign for cross-border freight during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just over 81,000 truckers crossed the U.S.-Canada border during the week ending May 17, the CBSA reported on May 19. It’s the highest tally since the week ending March 29. Also impressive is that this happened leading up to Monday’s Victoria Day holiday.
