Eastern Class I railroad CSX and the Georgia Ports Authority are offering an intermodal service that will run seven days a week and provide a direct rail connection between the Port of Savannah and CSX’s intermodal terminal in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Florida lawmakers present $30M to Jaxport for new container cranes

Florida legislators have provided the Jacksonville Port Authority (Jaxport) in Florida $30 million to purchase two new container cranes for the Blount Island Marine Terminal at the Port of Jacksonville.

Jaxport says the cranes will increase the port’s cargo handling efficiencies, which will allow more cargo to move through the port. The new ship-to-shore cranes will replace outdated equipment at the port.

Container volumes grow from June to July for Georgia Ports Authority

July container volumes at the Port of Savannah were 17% higher than in June but 16% lower than in July 2022, which was the busiest July on record for the Georgia Ports Authority.

Georgia Ports’ fiscal year volumes slide nearly 7%

The Georgia Ports Authority handled 5.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units in its 2023 fiscal year ending June 30, down 6.7% from fiscal year 2022 but higher than the 5.3 million TEUs moved in 2021 and the 4.5 million TEUs moved in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of that total, GPA handled 1.13 million TEUs in loaded imports at the Port of Savannah in 2023, nearly 61% lower than 2022. Loaded export volume at Savannah for 2023 was 684,806 TEUs, down 49% year over year.

Container volumes at South Carolina Ports slipped by about 10% year over year when comparing fiscal year 2023 with 2022, but they were up by about 1% from 2021, the port authority reported.

February volumes soften at South Carolina Ports

Despite a year-over-year decline, last month’s volumes were the second-highest ever for February for South Carolina Ports.

SC Ports handled record cargo volumes last year

South Carolina Ports joins Georgia and Virginia in posting a record 2022, with the Port of Charleston handling the most containers ever in its history. The port complex handled nearly 2.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units in the calendar year, up 1.5% from 2021, the port said Thursday.
