UK: Foreign flagged ship detentions in December

The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced that during December there were three new detention of foreign flagged vessels in a UK port, while seven foreign flagged ships remained under detention during December 2019 after failing port state control (PSC) inspection.

Nine seafarers stranded in UK to be repatriated for Christmas

Nine Russian seafarers stranded in Portland after their ship was detained by UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) in November will all be repatriated by Christmas, according to international maritime charity Sailors’ Society.

The men have now all been paid and have received their plane tickets home. Four have already left and the final five are due to fly on 24 December.

The Nigerian-flagged ship, MV Jireh, was towed into the port after it suffered power failure on 23 November.

Watch: Two rescued from sinking sailing vessel

The UK Maritime Coast Guard Agency rescued two people off Cornwall on November 18, after their sailing vessel took on water and started to sink.

Specifically, on early morning of November 18, the Falmouth Coast Guard received a radio mayday broadcast from the two people in danger, as their 70-feet yacht, located 21 nautical miles north of the Isle of Scilly, was taking on water and its electric systems failed due to the incoming weather conditions.

Man loses life as he was dragged overboard by fishing gear

UK MAIB published its report on a man overboard incident from the single-handed creel boat Sea Mist. The incident took place on 27 March 2019, and resulted to the loss of one life.

On 27 March 2019, Sea Mist’s skipper and his son, the skipper of the creel boat Ocean Lee, arrived at Macduf harbour to start a day’s fishing. Once on board their respective vessels, both men put on their PFDs and set out towards the harbour entrance.

UK MCA boards cargo that departed Sweden without permission

Scandinavian Coast Guard asked the UK MCA to board the Rix Emerald following allegations that the vessel departed Sweden without permission, and disappeared when the Swedish Transport Agency tried to detain the vessel, as the Courier reports.

The Rix Emerald, registered with the Baltic Shipping Company and flying the Cypriot flag, departed from Lilla Edet to Montrose. While going down the Göta River on Friday, it experienced technical problems; the vessel was transmitting a load of oats.
