US MARAD: Updated guidance for ships in Strait of Hormuz

An escalating tension in the Persian Gulf over the last months continues to pose serious threats to commercial vessels. Associated with these threats is a potential for miscalculation or misidentification that could lead to aggressive actions, the US MARAD warned. Vessels operating in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman may also encounter GPS interference, bridge-to-bridge communications spoofing or other communications jamming with little to no warning.

Merchant ship fired with shots off Somalia

A merchant vessel was attacked by pirates while sailing in the Gulf of Aden on 16 October, according to data provided by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). 

The incident was reported in position: 004900N 0505300E. The attackers fired shots against the vessel, but the armed guards onboard returned the shots. The attackers abandoned their plan to board the ship and escaped on their skiff. The Master confirmed the vessel and crew are safe.
