More than 40% of the energy used by the US fleet could be replaced with zero emissions solutions: UMAS report

A new report by UMAS, commissioned by Ocean Conservancy titled “The Maritime Fleet of the USA—the current status and potential for the future” shows the scale of US shipping fleet emissions and opportunities to decarbonise the sector.

In 2018, carbon emissions from all US-flagged vessels amounted to around 26 million tonnes, approximately 2.4% of global shipping emissions, according to the report, and domestic shipping voyages accounted for about 70% of carbon emissions from the US-flagged...

GHG costs could pass $360/tonne CO2 to meet 2050 decarbonisation target

Carbon pricing could rise to as much as $360/tonne in the 2030s, according to a Getting to Zero Coalition (GtZC) report published today.
But the addition of LNG powered vessels, which emit the potent methane gas, could see costs rise even higher..
Closing the Gap offers an outline of the policy options available to regulators that will encourage vessel operators to switch from carbon-based fuels to zero-emission energy.

Decarbonisation, Covid and fuel prices, a lurid mix

Fuel prices appeared set to rise, then the Covid-19 outbreak hit the global economy. What will the virus mean for the future of container shipping? Dr Tristan Smith, University College London researcher and a member of the University Maritime Advisory Services team, offers a view to how the post-pandemic energy developments will pan out.

When I first considered this issue, we were still in the early stages of the crisis (at least in Europe) with early signs emerging on how Covid-19 might impede...

Collaboration key to meeting climate targets

International Maritime Organization (IMO) general secretary Kitack Lim has called for collaboration from all stakeholders in the maritime industry to work together in order to combat the global existential threat from carbon emissions at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week.

The secretary general’s comments came as UMAS, the partnership between the University College London (UCL) Energy Institute and consultancy MATRANS Ltd, warned that shipping’s transition to zero carbon...
