Generating workforce for FSS programme will be a challenge: UK officials

Generating the required workforce at Harland & Wolff’s shipyards as part of the plan to manufacture three logistics vessels for the UK’s Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) under the Fleet Solid Support (FSS) programme has been highlighted as a key risk and “challenging”, according to senior Royal Navy (RN) officials.

In January this year the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) awarded a £1.6bn contract to Team Resolute, comprised of UK ship designers BMT, UK shipyard Harland & Wolff (Belfast and Appledore),...

Opinion: The UK has lost more than a monarch with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II

queen-elizabeth-uk

Stability, and maybe even decency, have been in short supply in the UK in the past few years. Issues such as Scottish independence, Brexit and the future of Northern Ireland have polarised the country, while the conduct of its leading politicians during the Covid-19 lockdowns dented faith in its leaders and damaged its reputation globally.

Above all of this has stood one woman: Queen Elizabeth II. While the parties were going on in Downing Street, she was mourning her husband in a manner that...

FDI in logistics in 2021: The state of play

logistics-fdi-2021

The Global FDI Annual Report 2022 shows the number of greenfield foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in logistics declined by 5.7% in 2021. This is more because 2020 was an exceptional year that witnessed a huge spike in demand for online goods and services due to Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, this meant the logistics sector was one of only a small number of FDI sectors to grow in 2020. Although project numbers declined slightly in 2021 compared with 2020, they were still 4.9% higher than...

FDI drivers in 2022: ESG

esg-fdi-investment

Embracing environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria is rising in importance as a driver of foreign direct investment (FDI), with investors increasingly taking into account such criteria as part of their site selection decision.

However, when it comes to responsible investing, there is more to it than simply ticking off the ‘E’, ‘S’ and ‘G’. Taking into consideration the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is becoming more prominent, while all companies have to be on their guard...

Europe’s response to Ukraine crisis: More gas, but from elsewhere

EU prime ministers last night adopted the harshest sanctions regime ever enacted in EU history, freezing Russia out of the international financial system in response to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine yesterday morning. However, they held back on firing the three big guns: hitting the oil and gas sector, excluding Russia from the SWIFT bank transfer system, and levying direct sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin himself. The speculation is that they are keeping those threats in play...

What impact will the Ukraine invasion have on wheat prices?

Ukraine was once known as the breadbasket of the Soviet Union, and in more recent decades as the breadbasket of Europe, meaning the Russian invasion is poised to have an effect on food prices across the world, especially on those of food staples such as flour and pasta, and therefore affecting vulnerable countries the most.

According to the UN’s Comtrade, the main destinations of Ukrainian wheat in 2019 were Egypt ($3.65bn worth), Indonesia ($664.5m), Bangladesh ($418.6m), Turkey ($207.4m) and...

Opinion: Why the Ukrainian economy matters to Russia (and the rest of the world)

At the time of writing, Russian tanks are storming into Ukraine from several directions while cruise missiles bombard the country’s cities and military installations. This full-on invasion, which began the morning of 24 February, has been long in the making.

Its orchestrator, Russian President Vladimir Putin, began building up to this moment, rhetorically and politically speaking, years before he amassed 100,000 troops along the Ukrainian border at the start of 2022.
