Officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently apprehended 48 people who allegedly sought to cross the U.S. border illegally from Mexico as stowaways on auto hauler rail cars operated by BNSF (NYSE: BRK) and Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP).

The incidents occurred between last Thursday and Saturday at the El Paso, Texas, port of entry.

In one incident on Thursday, CBP officers processing a northbound train at a Union Pacific (UP) rail crossing discovered 13 alleged stowaways in an auto...

Class 1 railroads may make some cost-cutting measures permanent

A photograph of a train in a rail yard. There are electricity lines above the train and behind it.

The Class I railroads are considering retaining some of the measures they implemented to scale down operations as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, according to comments some executives have made at recent industry conferences.

“I’m very confident that as we do add back resources, we will not add them back on a one-to-one basis,” said CN (NYSE: CNI) Chief Financial Officer Ghislain Houle at the Deutsche Bank 11th Annual Virtual Global Industrials & Materials Summit on June 9.

Have rail volumes bottomed out?

A photograph of a hopper car and a tank car.

Rail volumes could rebound in the second half of the year, but the pace of a rebound will depend largely on consumer confidence, executives from several Class I railroads cautioned at recent investor conferences.

There is still little visibility “in terms of how the consumer is going to reengage,” said Jennifer Hamann, chief financial officer for Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) at a conference sponsored by investment firm Deutsche Bank on Tuesday. Hamann also spoke at an investor conference sponsored...

Operational changes helped railcars move faster, says Union Pacific report

A photograph of a train locomotive by a buidling.

Converting more hump yards to flat switching has reduced the time a railcar is at a rail yard, Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) said in its 2019 sustainability report released May 28.

Union Pacific (UP) uses hump yards to sort railcars in such a way that blocks of cars are consolidated based on common destinations, the report said. Flat switching results in the same outcome but maintenance costs are much less, according to UP.

“Each time a car touches a [hump] yard, it adds about 24 hours to its...

Although U.S. rail traffic is still sharply lower compared with the same period in 2019, rail volumes for intermodal and commodities such as motor vehicles and grain are higher sequentially on a weekly basis, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

U.S. grain volumes totaled 21,977 carloads for the week that ended Saturday, which is a 2.3% decrease compared with the same period in 2019 but 5.7% higher than 20,790 carloads for the week ending May 16. Meanwhile, weekly carloads...

Union Pacific shutters operation of multimodal service Cold Connect

Customers say they were notified early May 8 that Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) was ceasing operations of its multimodal service Cold Connect, which offered end-to-end transportation service for refrigerated loads.

A Cold Connect representative confirmed the closure and told FreightWaves that low freight rates and consumers moving toward purchasing shelf-stable items, like canned goods, rice and beans instead of fresh produce amid the coronavirus pandemic, contributed to declining sales.

UP purchased...

Commentary: When will PSR-driven volume and service growth emerge?

The views expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of FreightWaves or its affiliates.

This week’s strategic question is “What are the bold new benefits shippers can expect now that the freight railways are super-efficient?”

It is May, and freight carriers – including the railroads – have issued their first quarter 2020 report cards. Simultaneously, it is a time of considerable economic uncertainty.

Previously in such crises, certain companies and...
