Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in March in the United States since 1987.

Russia sanctions cut both ways for air cargo

A Lufthansa Cargo jet with containers waiting on the tarmac for loading.

The fallout from tit-for-tat aviation sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is starting to have an impact on the air cargo and airline sectors, with Russian airspace now off-limits to most Western carriers.

Finnair said Thursday it is considering additional furloughs of up to 90 days after having to reduce flight activity because its aircraft can no longer land in, or overfly, Russia. From 90 to 200 pilots and 150 to 450 cabin crew employees could be impacted, starting in April. Final...

Blizzard cripples US air cargo operations

Planes on the tarmac in snowy weather.

A major winter storm moving through the eastern half of the U.S. is snarling express delivery and air cargo operations, with carriers grounding aircraft and shutting terminals in many airports due to hazardous conditions.

FedEx Express (NYSE: FDX) said in a service bulletin that it experienced substantial disruptions overnight at its Memphis, Tennessee, and Indianapolis hubs due to freezing rain and snow, respectively.

“Potential delays are possible for package deliveries across the U.S. with a...

In air cargo bull market, United flies dog food and mayo

A white United Airlines jet with blue tail is airborne, heading away from camera.

United Airlines generated $2.4 billion in cargo revenue last year, double the 2019 total, capped by a record fourth quarter of $727 million.

Revenue like that is possible during an airfreight bull run when shippers, desperate to avoid clogged ocean shipping routes and get urgent products to customers, are willing to charter cargo-only passenger aircraft to move products like mayonnaise, dog food and soap.

A week ago, United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL) carried 6 tons of black soap in the belly of a...

Hydrogen hype? United Airlines says it could fly new-tech jets by 2028

A small white United Express jet, close up from near the front nose.

United Airlines’ announcement Monday that it could be flying hydrogen-electric-powered regional jets by 2028 runs counter to expert consensus that development timelines will take at least twice as long given the complexity of the technology and the amount of funding required for development and commercialization.

“Sometimes showmanship trumps science and technology,” Richard Aboulafia, vice president of analysis for Teal Group, a Fairfax, Virginia, firm that provides market analysis and...

United Airlines makes more cargo revenue with less cargo

A white United Airlines jet takes off, view from the rear.

Cargo and domestic leisure travel were United Airlines’ strong suit in the third quarter as the carrier just missed returning to profitability despite better-than-expected results.

Cargo revenue soared 84% to $519 million compared to 2019, setting a record for the three-month period. For the first nine months of the year, cargo revenue is up 88% to $1.6 billion.

Those gains, however, don’t represent more cargo volume. Cargo revenue ton miles, an industry metric that measures the revenue earned...

United Airlines restarts cargo-only flights

A United Airlines jet at the airport gate with cargo containers on the tarmac ready for loading.

United Airlines has restarted cargo-only flights just weeks after assigning all aircraft to normal passenger operations because the delta variant has dragged down travel volumes and growth expectations for the remainder of the year.

“I just released five [Boeing] 777-300s to our cargo division for later this year to put those aircraft back into all-cargo markets, based on the dynamics we’re seeing in the marketplace today, so these aircraft won’t be idle,” Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella...

United Express operator Air Wisconsin dips toe in air cargo

A small Air Wisconsin cargo jet sits on tarmac next to big hangar on bright day.

Air Wisconsin, which flies under the United Express brand as a regional partner of United Airlines, is exploring opportunities as an all-cargo carrier with a single freighter it expects to deploy in early December, President and CEO Robert Binns said.

The Appleton, Wisconsin-based company, which owns and operates a fleet of 64 small CRJ-200 jets for United in the Midwest and eastern U.S., has leased a CRJ-200 (Canadair Regional Jet) converted freighter in an effort to diversify its revenue...
