TFI’s US LTL operations need heavier shipments, CEO says of Q1 results

Some key statistics at the U.S. LTL operations of TFI International remain a cause for concern at the Canada-based trucking conglomerate, and CEO Alain Bedard did not hold back discussing those issues on the company’s first-quarter earnings call.

The core of the U.S. LTL activities at TFI (NYSE: TFII) is known as TForce, and its roots are in the TFI acquisition of UPS’ LTL operations, UPS Freight, in 2021.

LTL discussions often turn to revenue per hundredweight, or yield, in analyzing how a...

TFI handily beats consensus Q2 estimates

Transport and logistics giant TFI International Inc. blew away second-quarter estimates late Thursday, leading the Montreal-based company to significantly raise its guidance for full-year earnings per share and free cash flow.

Adjusted earnings per share of $2.61 handily surpassed the $1.73 EPS analyst estimates and came close to doubling levels from the prior year’s quarter. Revenues including fuel surcharges hit $2.4 billion, a 32% gain. Adjusted operating ratio — the ratio of revenues and...

TForce Freight drivers to reduce miles, handle more freight

A brown tractor-trailer with the logo of TForce Freight travels on a city street with a trailer of UPS seen in the background.

TForce Freight pickup and delivery drivers will be driving fewer miles and picking up more freight per stop as part of TFI International’s efforts to improve operational efficiency in its U.S. LTL operations, CEO Alain Bédard said on Tuesday.

“Drivers, they like to drive. … Me, I like to pick up freight,” Bédard told financial analysts. “So we have a disconnect. So what we want to do is have our P&D guys drive less miles and pick up more freight.”

Bédard made the comments a day after...

TForce Freight drivers win small victory in truck speed fight

A white TForce Freight truck travels on a highway.

TForce Freight has turned back up the speeds of some trucks in a small victory for drivers angered over the LTL carrier’s move to slow down its fleet by 3 mph, FreightWaves has learned.

TFI International-owned TForce increased the maximum speed to 72 mph of sleeper cab trucks based at its Houston terminals during the past week, sources said.

The change came following requests from drivers who complained they were running out of hours on longer runs that previously could be completed within 24...

TFI International is consolidating its U.S. truckload and dedicated trucking operations under the umbrella of its Missouri-based carrier CFI, which has already absorbed Transport America — with the small dedicated operation of former UPS Freight to follow in 2022.

CFI announced the changes on Monday as part of an expansion and reorganization. It also includes a new temperature-controlled division from TFI’s acquisition of MCT.

The newly expanded CFI has a fleet of over 3,700 power units, which...

TFI to close ex-UPS Freight terminals to rein in costs

A TForce Freight truck parked at a former terminal of UPS Freight now owned by TFI International.

TFI International plans to close four former UPS Freight terminals in December as the Canadian company works to bring down costs and optimize its U.S. LTL network, CEO Alain Bédard told financial analysts on Friday.

The terminals don’t handle enough shipments to justify their continued operation, Bédard said. They include one location in Chicago and two in West Virginia, while Bédard didn’t identify the fourth.

The closures account for a small portion of the over 200 facilities TFI acquired as...
