Teamsters rally in Atlanta ahead of UPS negotiations

Teamsters President Sean O’ Brien lashed out Saturday at critics who say the union’s hard line in contract negotiations with UPS Inc. will push the economy into a recession, saying the burden of keeping the country out of a downturn falls on UPS, not the Teamsters.

At a raucous, ear-splitting rally in UPS’ hometown of Atlanta, O’Brien acknowledged concerns that a strike against UPS (NYSE: UPS), which delivers the equivalent of 7% of the U.S.’ gross domestic product per day, could be devastating...

Non-FedEx shippers may lose out if strike occurs at UPS, consultant says

Shippers that don’t have existing relationships with FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) may find it difficult to arrange for FedEx to handle their shipments in the event the Teamsters union strikes UPS Inc. (NYSE: UPS) starting Aug. 1, a consultant said Wednesday.

Adi Karamcheti, senior consultant for Shipware LLC and who spent nearly two decades in sales and pricing positions at FedEx, said in a webinar that FedEx will focus on UPS accounts that do business with both carriers. The main reason, Karamcheti...

5 things to know with the UPS-Teamsters clock ticking

Time is running short for a handshake agreement to avert a nationwide Teamsters union strike against UPS Inc. threatened for Aug. 1. Talks broke off July 5 and will resume next week. Shippers that haven’t made contingencies could be up against the wall. Some will simply brace for service disruptions and undelivered packages, which could take weeks to sort out even if a strike is relatively short.

“For shippers who have done little or no planning, it’s too late,” said Nate Skiver, founder of LPF...

UPS, Teamsters to return to table

UPS Inc. and the Teamsters union will return to the bargaining table next week after what will be a roughly three-week hiatus in an effort to hammer out a new five-year term contract just days before the old one expires.

In a statement, UPS (NYSE: UPS) said that “we are pleased to be back at the negotiating table next week to resolve the few remaining open issues. We are prepared to increase our industry-leading pay and benefits, but need to work quickly to finalize a fair deal that provides...

UPS pilots won’t fly if Teamsters strike

The union representing UPS pilots says they will not cross picket lines if Teamsters drivers and package sorters walk off the job when the current contract expires Aug. 1, resulting in the immediate shutdown of the express logistics company’s global air operations.

UPS (NYSE: UPS) has 3,300 pilots who are represented by the Independent Pilots Association (IPA), a separate union from the Teamsters.

“If the Teamsters are on strike, we will honor that strike and we will not fly,” IPA spokesman Brian...
