UPS, Teamsters talks collapse

Contract negotiations between UPS Inc. and the Teamsters union collapsed early Wednesday morning, with each side blaming the other for its demise.

The Teamsters issued a statement saying that UPS (NYSE: UPS) walked away from the bargaining table at 4 a.m. after presenting an unacceptable offer to the Teamsters that did not address members’ needs. The UPS Teamsters National Negotiating Committee unanimously rejected the package.

Following marathon negotiations, UPS refused to give the Teamsters a l...

Strike ahead? What to watch as UPS and Teamsters negotiations unfold

By Micheal McDonagh

The views expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of FreightWaves or its affiliates.

Labor issues are a long-standing fixture of logistics discourse. But instead of the seemingly constant truck driver shortage, logistics managers find themselves staring down a possible labor strike for the second time in less than a year.

In 2022, the threat of a rail strike grabbed plenty of headlines and sent shippers...

Teamsters rally against UPS at Southern California event

The Teamsters union headed into Southern California over the weekend to demand higher wages and better benefits from UPS Inc. The two sides begin negotiations on Monday over a new master contract and spar over how far they’ve gotten in bargaining 40 regional supplemental agreements tied to the master compact.

“There are 12 weeks from Monday until the expiration of the contract. We’ve stated our intentions. Teamsters will not be working beyond the expiration date of that contract unless there is...

Study: US annual parcel shipping volumes to grow 5% through 2028

U.S. parcel shipping activity is expected to grow 5% per year over the next five years, continuing what is expected to be an increase over pre-pandemic volume projections despite a slowdown in 2022, according to an annual parcel shipping index published Tuesday by global shipping and mailing company Pitney Bowes Inc.

By 2028, annual U.S. parcel volume is expected to hit 28 billion, according to the report.

America shipped, received and returned 21.2 billion parcels last year, 1.1 billion...

Is inflation crushing e-commerce volume growth?

Walmart on Thursday announced layoffs affecting approximately 200 employees in its Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, fulfillment center. Earlier in the week, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that the e-commerce giant would cut 9,000 jobs, the latest in a string of layoffs.

Something’s happening in e-commerce, but it’s difficult to disentangle all of the data: Census Bureau numbers on seasonally unadjusted e-commerce retail sales were up 6% year over year (y/y), but they’re only current as of the fourth...

C.H. Robinson going slow on a new CEO

A couple of weeks ago, it had become apparent by the many headlines that C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ: CHRW) had zeroed in on Jim Barber, former chief operating officer of UPS Inc. (NYSE: UPS), to become its next CEO.

As March draws to a close, either the board is being very deliberate, or it may be having second thoughts if Barber is who the nation’s largest freight broker needs at this time.

As of Wednesday, nothing had been announced. Barber hasn’t been ruled in or out. He is still...
