Automaker to temporarily lay off 900 US workers due to tariffs

Stellantis said on Thursday it will pause production at assembly plants in Canada and Mexico and temporarily lay off about 900 employees at auto factories in Michigan and Indiana. 

The announcement comes just hours after President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff plan went into effect at midnight, including 25% import duties on foreign-made cars.

Senate adopts resolution to halt tariffs on Canadian imports

The U.S. Senate approved a bipartisan measure late Wednesday aimed at blocking tariffs on imported goods from Canada.

The resolution, adopted by a 51-48 vote, would terminate President Donald Trump’s Feb. 1 emergency declaration on fentanyl trafficking, which the White House used to issue duties on Canadian imports. Four Republicans joined all Democrats in the Senate in voting for the measure.

US, Canadian steelworkers hit with layoffs amid tariff uncertainty

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. said it will lay off more than 1,200 steel and mine workers in Michigan and Minnesota, citing market conditions and weak automotive production in the U.S.

Trump imposes 25% import tariffs on autos made outside US

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he will place import tariffs of 25% on all vehicles imported into the U.S.

The tariffs will go into effect April 2 and will apply to finished vehicles that are shipped into the country, including American brands whose vehicles are assembled outside the U.S.
