US spring planting faces high soil moisture, states an Argus Media news report.

Elevated levels of soil moisture

The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) crop progress report shows elevated levels of soil moisture in the major grain producing states, which could slow spring planting.

In its first crop progress report for the 2023-24 marketing year, the USDA reports 19pc surplus condition for topsoil compared with 13pc at the same time last year and 57pc adequate as...

Can restaurant leftovers be carried across the US-Mexico border?

While most people don’t perceive uneaten scraps of steak and soiled napkins as a huge danger to the U.S., border agents work every day to prevent items such as those from entering the country.

Collecting trash and restricted materials from airplanes, ocean vessels, trucks and trains entering the United States is part of the Department of Agriculture’s regulated garbage and quarantine program.

The goal is to prevent potentially harmful plant pests and foreign animal diseases into the U.S. at more...

USDA shares forecasts for grain and farm exports

A photograph of a train with hoppers. The train is crossing a desert-like landscape.

U.S. grain volumes have been a bright spot for the railroads, with higher volumes reflecting export demand.

Indeed, grain carloads were up 23.2% year-to-date to 509,364 as of last Saturday, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Since September, grain rail carloads have consistently been above the levels of recent years. Due to high prices, plantings of corn and other crops have been above historical norms. (Source: SONAR)
