Air Canada prepares Vancouver hub for 2024 arrival of 777 freighters

MIAMI — Air Canada’s first freighter aircraft are the most visible manifestation of an aggressive push to grow cargo business, but the airline is also building up airport infrastructure to support higher volumes and more profitable specialty products.

Without efficient ground handling capabilities the extra cargo jets won’t deliver the expected service and revenue.

Air Canada is preparing to expand its Vancouver, British Columbia, cargo terminal in preparation for receiving two 777 factory-built...

A cargo container ready to be slid through the door of a cargo jet.

In a change of plans, Air Canada on Thursday operated the inaugural flight of its first dedicated freighter to Vancouver with a full load of supplies to help British Columbia cope with flooding and landslides that have disrupted freight rail and truck transportation.

Israel Aircraft Industries delivered the converted Boeing 767 cargo jet to Air Canada’s Toronto hub on Sunday. The aircraft was originally scheduled to fly its first mission to Frankfurt, Germany, but Air Canada Cargo deployed the...

Port of Vancouver ship backlog hits 60

A black-and-white satellite radar image shows some of ships waiting at anchorages near the Port of Vancouver.

The Port of Vancouver hit a grim milestone this week as the number of ships waiting for a berth reached 60 despite the resumption of rail service.

It happened Tuesday night, and included nine container, 17 grain and 16 coal vessels. The number had dipped to 57 as of late Wednesday.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, in an operations update Wednesday, reported that “anchorage demand continues to exceed capacity” as Canada’s largest port continues to battle the impacts of the flooding and...

CN reopens key Port of Vancouver rail line — again

CN trains at the Port of Vancouver Neptune terminal with coal in the background.

CN has resumed service on its Kamloops-Vancouver corridor, the Canadian railway said on Monday, restoring a critical rail link to the Port of Vancouver.

The rail corridor was shut down three weeks ago as a result of damages brought by flooding and landslides that devastated British Columbia. CN (NYSE: CNI) had briefly restored service two weeks later before shutting it down again as a precautionary measure.

“CN crews will continue to monitor both the rail infrastructure as well as the terrain...

Vancouver port trucker strike averted as union reaches deal with 2nd carrier

An aerial view of trucks at the Port of Vancouver, next to trains with containers.

A strike by container truckers at a carrier serving the Port of Vancouver has been averted after their union reached a last-minute agreement with their company on Thursday.

Prudential Transportation signed a tentative agreement less than a day before around 120 drivers were set to begin their strike, the truckers’ union, Unifor, said. It followed a similar agreement reached by another carrier serving the port, Aheer Transportation, on Tuesday.

The agreements averted a potentially devastating...

What’s causing repeated floods in Pacific Northwest?

Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) stacking sandbags to hold back floodwater in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

It was an extremely wet November in parts of the Pacific Northwest, causing major flooding on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border.

The latest storm system to hit the region triggered new evacuation orders and at least one mudslide in flood-ravaged British Columbia, Canada, late Sunday.

On the same day, flood sirens sounded in Washington as the Nooksack River overflowed. Henry Braun, mayor of Abbotsford, British Columbia, told reporters the water flow was headed toward the Canadian border city...
