Supply chain radar: Club deals

There’s one rather enticing Premium common thread running through the latest research concerning supply chain outsourcing trends by the shippers and a slew of bolt-on logistics deals announced in recent weeks.
Ever heard of club deals?
Premise
Let’s start with this: “43% of shippers plan to increase resilience by enlarging their pool of logistics partners in 2021,” Transport Intelligence argued last week.
In isolation, this may leave you with mixed feelings as to what that …

HMM to follow Maersk lead and aim to become a logistics player, says CEO

South Korean carrier HMM is looking to follow some of its peers and transform itself into a logistics business to underpin its rapid expansion strategy.

Market Insight: CMA CGM sprouts wings to break through the clouds

“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago” – Warren Buffett.
The last Premium piece of insight for the year couldn’t be about any other hot topic than vertical consolidation.
Initial, related sea/air heavy asset appetite took off in early Q2; later morphed into Q3 fever thanks to Covid-19; and then in Q4 it turned nearly into a fully fledged obsession and depression cycle …

2020 radar: What we went through – and what’s next

With all the noise surrounding a structural lack of capacity in ocean and air freight; asset-heavy versus asset-light logistics in the vertical consolidation race; the resurgence of integrated logistics in the time of Covid-19 – well, all the major themes we have been banging on about for some time weren’t a total waste of time in previous years, and even less so in 2020.
👏: a round of self-applause for the …

Market insight: Kuehne + DHL + Schenker: call it a Super-NVOCC triumvirate

Take three chief executives who know each other well, all carrying the old-school Kuehne + Nagel (K+N) badge thanks to over 40 years of combined experience at the world ocean freight leader out of Switzerland. Detlef Trefzger, seven years at K+N, after 14 at DB Schenker; Tim Scharwath, with his stunning 24 years at K+N, now at DHL Global Forwarding for over three years; and Jochen Thewes with over 12 …

Against the odds: Klaus-Michael Kuehne and the unthinkable in the supply chain

When a powerful world leader in logistics like Klaus-Michael Kuehne talks vertical consolidation and related, unthinkable opportunities as well as innovative structural developments, with new alliances possibly forming for the asset-light players, you had better listen carefully to what he says.
And now, following his latest Q&A released (in German) last week by DVZ (headed: “Klaus -Michael Kuehne: Often enough we were the whipping boys”), we must duly question once more whether we have …

Supply chain radar: Forwarders vs carriers – the devil’s $12bn pot has no lid

Ethics and business seldom make good bed fellows and while all logistics majors, regardless of their capital-intensive nature, talk co-operation in public, decarbonisation and the like by 2050 and beyond, their attempt at jeopardising each other’s role in the supply chain is really funny.
It’s similar to banking, but better than banking – even more so now, at the end of a record-breaking earnings season.
Me & you
Asset heavy or asset light, …

Market Insight: Mærsk to Schenker & friends: ‘You’re welcome. Now leave us alone.’

Rest assured that “take eloquence and wring its neck” perfectly fits the narrative as all major forwarders unite against AP Møller-Mærsk (APMM).
All the way through decadence
Caught in the middle of a power struggle, freight forwarders’ agents – those on the ground knowing what the heck really goes on with the local shippers – are seldom watching the supply chain fight with disdain. So let me add immediately some feedback from a …
