Boxship explodes off Yemen

Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) is the operator of the feeder ship ASL Bauhinia, whose crew abandoned the vessel on 28 January, after it caught fire.

The Hong Kong-flagged 2022-built 1,930 TEU ASL Bauhinia and its sister vessel, ASL Peony, were chartered from Hong Kong-based intra-Asia carrier Asean Seas Line and are deployed to ESL’s Gulf-Red Sea Connector service. China United Lines is understood to co-load on the service.

ASL Bauhinia was sailing from Jebel Ali to Jeddah at the time and an...

Bumpy rates in 2025 amid alliance resets and ongoing Red Sea challenges

The seasonal drop in container freight rates after Chinese New Year 2025 could be greater than in previous years, as it coincides with the reshuffling of container shipping alliances in February 2025, according to shipping guru Lars Jensen.

Container trade’s next turn: Price wars, cheap contracts, new ships

What does the future hold for container shipping alliances and price competition among ocean carriers? How low will spot and long-term freight rates go in the Asia-U.S. trade? And what happens when a massive wave of new container vessels starts hitting the water in the months ahead?

These are just some of the issues addressed by Vespucci Maritime CEO Lars Jensen and Xeneta CEO Patrik Berglund during FreightWaves’ Global Supply Chain Week (GSCW) virtual forum on Tuesday.

Lars Jensen: Container market set to be “drastically different” in 2023

The Baltic Exchange, in collaboration with Freightos, and Vespucci Maritime, have released their container shipping report for January.

Their opinion is that in 2023, container market conditions will be drastically different from 2022.

A normalisation of container logistics, retail inventory correction, a cyclical downturn and new environmental regulations could shape the new year.

Operational normality was thoroughly disrupted by the ripples of the pandemic in 2020-2022. At a visual level, the...

Container shipping at the crossroads: The big unwind or party on?

container shipping

Is faltering consumer demand curbing imports, allowing port congestion to finally ease, releasing ship capacity and causing spot ocean rates to sink? Is this the beginning of “the big unwind”?

Or does waning West Coast port congestion stem from temporarily lower exports out of China due to COVID lockdowns, combined with a congestion shift toward East Coast ports? Is the economy still strong and the ocean freight market still fundamentally firm, with the port crunch to worsen in the second half,...

Price of ship fuel surging, poised to eclipse all-time high

shipping

It should come as no surprise: Just as you’re paying a lot more for gasoline at the pump, ship operators are paying a lot more for marine fuel. In fact, average marine fuel prices are rising even faster than landside fuel prices, and are now just a few dollars below all-time highs.

That’s bad news for shipowners, and to the extent fuel cost is passed on, bad news for cargo shippers, and, ultimately, those who buy imported goods.

The majority of cargo ships burn 0.5% sulfur fuel known as very low...

MSC makes surprise €5.7bn bid for the jewel in Bolloré’s African crown

MSC’s surprise last-minute €5.7bn bid to acquire Bolloré Africa Logistics from under the noses of its ocean carrier rivals represents a change of direction for the Aponte family business.
Hitherto, MSC has relied on organic growth to rise to the top of the container line rankings, and has shied away from large-scale involvement in logistics in its role as the self-appointed liner ‘darling’ of the freight forwarding sector.
It is thought, however, …

Omicron threatens tankers but could extend container shipping boom

omicron tanker container shipping

The latest twist in ocean shipping’s COVID saga: The new global threat from the omicron variant is being layered on top of existing fallout from delta-variant outbreaks in Europe and Asia.

Assuming omicron is not a false alarm, it’s more bad news for crude and product tanker rates, another positive for container shipping rates (with some downside risk also in the mix) and relatively neutral for dry bulk shipping, at least for now.

No matter what the shipping segment, omicron further obscures the...

California dwell fees postponed again, just as new service is set to debut

Congestion at Southern Californian ports has not been affected by the failure to introduce the increased container dwell charge, with vessels offshore remaining stubbornly high and one carrier even adding a service.
The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have again postponed the implementation date of their contentious container dwell fee, amid doubts it will ever be charged.
Following meetings yesterday with US port envoy John Porcari and industry stakeholders, the …
