NTSB investigation: Ignition of fuel leaking leads to vessel fire and sinking

NTSB issued an investigation report on the fire onboard and subsequent sinking of the fishing vessel Ariel, while in Sheep Bay, Alaska, in August 2019. The investigation identified ignition of fuel leaking from the generator fuel supply line as key cause of the fire.

Venezuelan patrol vessel sinks after collision with cruise vessel

The Government of Venezuela reported that the Venezuelan patrol vessel GC-23 Naiguata and the ice-class expedition cruise ship RCGS Resolute had an encounter, which resulted in the patrol vessel’s sinking.

NTSB investigation: Captain’s poor decision linked to vessel sinking

NTSB issued an investigation report on the flooding and sinking of the commercial fishing vessel Pacific 1 while in the Bering Sea, Alaska, in February 2019. The report identified the master’s decision to remain at sea with continuous flooding as key cause of the sinking.

New Zealand: Company to pay $514,300 in fines and reparation after overloaded fishing vessel sinks

A Wellington-based fishing company, its sole director, and a master were fined a total of $449,500 over the sinking of the grossly overloaded fishing boat ‘Victory II’ in June 2017. The company was also ordered to pay $64,800 in reparation to the crew for unpaid wages and emotional harm.

Maritime NZ Central Region Compliance Manager, Michael-Paul Abbott, said Victory II should have carried no more than five tonnes of fish.

Chinese cargo ship sinks off Japan, 13 missing

A Chinese cargo ship collided with a Japanese fishing vessel, resulting to the former’s sinking. From the sunken vessel, one crew member was rescued, whereas 13 seafarers are still missing.

Specifically, the Chinese cargo vessel ‘Guo Xing 1’ sank off Japan’s northern coast on March 1. As local media reported, the cargo ship collided with the Japanese shipping vessel ‘Eight Tomaru’ about 12 kilometres east of the mooring fishing port of Rososura, Aomori Prefecture, Japan.

USCG convenes Marine Board of Investigation into loss of ‘Scandies Rose’

The US Coast Guard has convened a Marine Board of Investigation into the loss of F/V Scandies Rose and five of its seven crew members. A Marine Board of Investigation is the highest level of investigation in the USCG.

Port of Colonia handles vessel from nearly sinking

On 26 February, the fast ship “Atlantic Express” almost sank off Port of Colonia, across Rio de La Plat. In fact, it said that the vessel had been damaged during docking at the port, while it was carrying around 260 passengers onboard.

The passengers were safely disembarked from the vessel, but the reasons of the nearly sinking still remain unknown.

Three die as cargoship sinks off Zhoushan

Three people lost their lives, while three more are missing, as a cargoship sank in the Zhoushan sea area. When the incident occurred, the crew were thrown into the sea.

Family, survivors of sunken Estonia ferry seek more investigation

The Government of Estonia issued a statement commenting that the Minister of Justice will form a working group of experts to resume the applications of passengers and families of the victims and seek additional investigation.
