Battle for boxes and space on ships and aircraft as Vietnam bounces back

Vietnam’s exports have bounced back quickly after months of lockdown, boosting freight rates and leaving forwarders fighting for space.
Strict social distancing in South Vietnam ended in early October, but not before a 6.1% GDP contraction in Q3 and warnings from business leaders of lost orders and investments if restrictions weren’t lifted.
The garment sector, for example, suffered an 18.6% year-on-year drop in exports in September, after many factories had been forced …

Asean box trade with the US growing faster than China’s as sourcing shifts

South-east Asia’s container trade with the US is growing faster than China’s, highlighting the region’s shifting sourcing patterns.
According to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC), the share of US container imports originating in Asean broke through 20% for the first time last year – while China’s share declined for the second successive year.
Asean volumes were up 16.1% to 4m teu, bringing the region’s total share to 21.9%, while volumes originating in …

Vietnam recovery held back by steep ocean rates and box woes

It’s getting harder and harder for SMEs to find container shipping space ex-Vietnam, opting instead for short-term storage.
Demand for Vietnamese goods is higher than ever, according to forwarders in Ho Chi Minh City, but only multinationals can afford the current steep freight rates.
Tom Tabouring, sales manager at Tin Nghia Logistics, told The Loadstar: “SMEs are looking for overflow warehousing space since they can’t afford – or are not willing to …

Call for Vietnam to make its own boxes as it probes shipping rate hikes

As key agricultural industries feel the effect of the spike in freight rates and lack of empty containers, Vietnam is the latest country to question the prices charged by shipping lines.
According to local media, the Vietnam Maritime Administration (VMA) has set up a working group to “remove difficulties for export activities and ensure transparency in the listing of freight prices”.
VMA deputy head Hoang Hong Giang told the Vietnam News Agency: “The …

New box terminal at Vietnam’s Cai Mep already attracting alliance calls

Vietnam’s newest container terminal is open for business – completing a turnaround for the once under-utilised Cai Mep deepwater port.
Gemalink International Port (GIP), the fifth container terminal at Cai Mep, 50km south-east of Ho Chi Minh City, is a joint-venture between homegrown logistics group Gemadept and Terminal Link, a terminal operator part-owned by CMA CGM.

China-Vietnam sourcing shift enters phase two, bringing more box congestion

The manufacturing shift from China to Vietnam is moving up a gear, putting pressure on the country’s container supply chains.
With 2.4% GDP growth forecast by the IMF, Vietnam is on track to become one of the fastest growing economies in the world in 2020, as many others fall into lockdown-induced recessions.
For example, Singapore and Malaysia look set to suffer deep economic slumps, which would see Vietnam overtake the pair to …

Vietnam’s Cai Mep port gets set to benefit from supply chain switch from China

South Vietnam’s Cai Mep-Thi Vai container port recently saw the maiden call of 2M’s TP17 service – another milestone in the long-awaited comeback of the much maligned deepwater complex.
The 12,000 teu Seroja Lima was welcomed by the APM Terminals-operated Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), the second-largest of the port’s seven competing facilities and boasting a 25% share of volumes.
Jan Bandstra, CMIT’s general director, said the port’s volumes had grown hand-in-hand …

SE Asian ports need to invest billions as shippers seek alternatives to China

Container terminals in South-east Asia may need to invest  up to $13bn to keep pace with expected coronavirus-driven supply chain diversification from China.
According to Eleanor Hadland, senior analyst, ports and terminals at Drewry, in addition to the country’s rising costs and the trade war with the US, the pandemic is going to be yet another “push factor” reducing China-centric procurement models.
“Major Chinese and international manufacturers have been increasingly seeking alternative …

Located in Thu Dau Mot City, around 30km from the southern commercial capital, the cross-dock facility will serve as a vital hub for Flexport’s South-east Asia operations, the company said.

Major players expand operations in South-east Asia with Vietnam the focus

AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC) is ramping up its footprint in South-east Asia.
In February, the cargo airline added Dhaka to its network with a twice-weekly service to hoover up garment exports from Bangladesh.
“The country’s emerging volumes tipped over 25% growth last year as the number of manufacturers based in the country increased,” said ABC general director Sergey Lazarev.
And the following month, the carrier announced it was stepping up its presence in Ho Chi Minh City to a twice-weekly...
