Port of Virginia’s near-record month ‘speaks volumes’

April was the second-most productive month in the history of the Port of Virginia in Norfolk.

The Virginia Port Authority said Tuesday that the Port of Virginia handled 323,244 twenty-foot equivalent units in April, up 12.9% year-over-year. 

The all-time record was set in December 2021, and April was just shy of missing the mark, by only 2,300 TEUs, according to the port authority. 

Loaded imports rose by 3.4% in April to 142,639 TEUs, while loaded exports grew by 4.2% to 99,589 TEUs.

Higher loaded imports drive up March volumes at Port of Virginia

March volumes at the Port of Virginia were the highest so far this year, the Virginia Port Authority said Thursday.

The Port of Virginia in Norfolk handled 314,698 twenty-foot equivalent units in March, 12.6% higher year-over-year. March’s volumes were also higher than January’s volume of about 262,000 TEUs and February’s 297,000.

Loaded imports accounted for nearly 47% of overall volumes, totaling 148,932 TEUs.

Port of Virginia welcomes pair of ship-to-shore cranes

Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) South is installing a pair of new container cranes that will enable the terminal to accommodate multiple ultra-large container vessels, the Port of Virginia said Monday.

November volumes at the Port of Virginia in Norfolk were at an all-time monthly record, according to the Virginia Port Authority.

September container volumes near 2021 highs at Port of Virginia

The Port of Virginia in Norfolk handled more than 306,000 twenty-foot equivalent units in September, the third month in 2021 that volumes exceeded 300,000.
