Electric truck recalls begin to mount — albeit in small numbers

The number of affected vehicles is barely noticeable — until you count the number of recall campaigns. Electric trucks are having early life quality problems.

The latest of 10 electric truck recalls in the past three months was reported on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website Monday. It involves the loss of power to 82 Freightliner eCascadia Class 8 trucks. The electronic axles may have insufficiently welded planetary gear sets.

NHTSA fines Volvo Group $130M for slow reporting of recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has fined Volvo Group North America up to $130 million in civil penalties for slow reporting of safety recalls, sloppy record keeping and insufficient employee training in handling product defects.

The penalty is among the largest levied under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966. NHTSA fined Daimler Truck North America $30 million for similar offenses in December 2020.

Mack recalls TerraPro refuse trucks because parking brakes may fail

Mack Trucks Inc. is recalling about 22,000 refuse trucks because the parking brake can fail and cause a rollaway. The company reported five crashes with one injury related to the issue that affects all of the recalled TerraPro models from 2008 to 2022.

Affected trucks are 2008 to 2019 TerraPro (MRU) and 2019 to 2022 TerraPro (TE) models. Mack told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that 100% of the 21,641 trucks could have the condition.

Paccar, Daimler, Volvo get bulk of $127M in SuperTruck 3 funding

Truck manufacturers Paccar Inc., Daimler Trucks North America and Volvo Group North America snagged the lion’s share of $127 million in federal SuperTruck 3 money to pursue advanced battery-electric and fuel cell electric truck projects.

Funding also went to automakers General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. to develop Class 4-6 medium-duty projects. In total, the Department of Energy awarded $199 million to fund 25 projects to help put cleaner cars and trucks on the road.

Microchip shortages finally slowing truck production

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is rotating downtime at two medium-duty truck plants as the shortage of microchips plaguing the automotive industry finally reaches truck manufacturers.
