Wallenius Wilhelmsen secures ro-ro contract extension, renewal worth more than $2B

Roll-on/roll-off carrier Wallenius Wilhelmsen announced separate contract changes worth more than $2 billion.

The Oslo, Norway-based company (OTC: WAWIF) said it has signed a contract renewal with a European automotive manufacturer. The five-year agreement, valued at $380 million, is set to commence on Tuesday. 

In a separate development, the carrier announced a 10-year contract extension with an automotive OEM.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen secures US$2 billion transport deal extension

Scandinavian RoRo shipping and vehicle logistics company Wallenius Wilhelmsen strengthens its partnership with an established auto original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and enters a 10-year contract extension.

The contract has an overall estimated gross revenue of US$2 billion, effective from April 2027.

Both parties aim to grow the partnership and develop new, efficient solutions that will optimize the supply chain for the OEM.

Georgia port tops US ro-ro gateways

The Port of Brunswick, Georgia, was the top U.S. port for vehicles in 2024.

Brunswick achieved a record year, totaling 901,912 units of autos and heavy equipment, up 13.3% and 160% y/y, respectively.

Georgia Ports President and Chief Executive Griff Lynch was quoted in a release as saying at the Brunswick State of the Port event that Colonel’s Island Terminal has become the nation’s busiest port for autos and heavy equipment, handling more than 2 million tons of roll-on/roll-off cargo in 2024.

Savannah containers up 11.4% in first-half FY2025

The Georgia Ports Authority said it handled more than 2.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units in the July-December fiscal year period, an increase of 11.4% or nearly 300,000 TEUs, year on year in the Port of Savannah.  

December volume grew 4.7% to more than 442,000 TEUs from December 2023.

Port of Baltimore claims a first with battery-electric railcar mover

The Port of Baltimore’s Wallenius Wilhelmsen terminal rolled out an electric railcar mover in what the port says is a first for the contemporary U.S. maritime industry.

The zero-emissions LOK 16.150E, manufactured by Marmon Rail’s Zephir division of Italy, features an 80-volt rechargeable battery system with onboard charger powering two 40-kilowatt, alternating current, brushless motors.
