First targetless laser sensor for offshore wind farms developed

Wärtsilä developed the first targetless laser sensor for offshore wind farm applications, called ‘SceneScan Monopole’. The laser sensor aims to increase safety onboard service operation vessels (SOVs).

The SceneScan Monopole measures the range and bearing to the offshore wind turbine, independent of the use of targets and GPS.

Wärtsilä introduces its lock entry assist system

The technology group Wärtsilä has developed a lock entry assist system that will facilitate a vessel’s approach and entrance into waterway locks. The development work has been carried out in cooperation with the Canada-based CSL Group. The initial deployment of the technology will be on board the ‘CSL St Laurent’, a 22,600 gross tonnage Trillium class bulk carrier owned by CSL. The ship operates on the waterways of the St Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes.

Wärtsilä’s Fully Integrated Scope Chosen For Largest LNG Fuelled High-Speed Catamaran

The largest ever high-speed catamaran, which will operate on LNG fuel, will feature a fully integrated scope of supply from the technology group Wärtsilä. The 125 metres long vessel is being built at the Armon Gijón shipyard in Spain for Spanish ferry operator Baleària. The order with Wärtsilä was booked in Q2, 2018.

The technology group Wärtsilä has acquired Burriel Navarro, S.L, a company operating in underwater services in the main ports of Spain. The acquisition supports the growth of Wärtsilä’s underwater services and expands the company’s local presence in the European market. Burriel Navarro will be part of Trident, a Wärtsilä company. Burriel Navarro has 20 employees and its annual revenue is approximately EUR 1.3 million. The acquisition was signed and closed on 31 October 2018.

Wärtsilä announces strong demand for scrubbers ahead of 2020 regulation

In its interim report for January – September 2018, Wärtsilä announced that the upcoming 2020 sulphur cap regulation has increased the demand for scrubbers, as ship owners try to comply.
