Western Star 47X in quarry

A Daimler Truck North America recall inadvertently confirmed the next addition to the Western Star X-Series of heavy-duty vocational trucks. A small number of pre-production 57X models have a defect in which part of the hood can become unglued and fall off.

Western Star has been renaming its off-highway heavy haul trucks as X-Series models. The 49X and 47X account for most of a 2,294-unit recall to replace stainless steel hood-mounted side intake covers that can come debonded from the intake....

Daimler Truck, the newly spun off stand-alone entity out from the shadow of Mercedes-Benz automobiles, reported Tuesday that groupwide sales rose 20% in 2021 compared with a year earlier. The gains came despite parts and semiconductor shortages that hampered production.

The group sales of 455,000 units outpaced 2020 results of 378,290 trucks and buses and hit volume targets at the group level and in segments.

Truck order cancellations spike, but not for lack of demand

Anecdotal reports of Class 8 truck orders being canceled started gaining currency in October. Now, the statistics are bearing out the stories. Manufacturer-spiked orders for the past two months are the highest in more than a quarter of a century.

“Between this month’s cancellations and the restatement of October’s volume, we have to go all the way back to Q3 1995 to find a month, or two, to rival current cancellation volumes,” said Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst at ACT Research.

Exclusive: Daimler drops Western Star 5700XE model, some current orders canceled

Alex Kholb understood when his salesman told him delivery of the Western Star 5700EX he ordered in July was delayed from November to January. After all, the current supply chain crisis is inconveniencing everybody in some way.

But Kholb was incensed when the dealership called a week ago to tell him his order had been canceled with no substitute equipment offered and no incentive or priority on a future order. He would get back the $1,500 deposit on the $165,000 tractor.

“I said, ‘Wait a minute....

Western Star births little brother for 49X vocational truck

Western Star is making a family thing out of its newest off-highway trucks, introducing a little brother to the popular 49X vocational model that debuted last year.

The move signals Daimler Trucks’ commitment to building the brand’s tough-task vocational trucks in North America as it becomes a stand-alone company later this year.

The 47X, which goes on sale in early 2022, shares a chassis and electrical architecture with the 49X, meaning customers can seamlessly move between the models and...
