Port Klang fire: 22 containers burned, 38 damaged

A serious fire broke out in the Westports terminal of Malaysia’s main container port, Port Klang, burning 22 containers and causing damage to 38 boxes.

Port Klang Authority general manager K. Subramaniam said that the fire started at 4.15 pm (local time) on 4 April. Firefighters needed 11 hours to extinguish the flames, which were completely put out around 3 am on 5 April.

Westports achieves 11% growth in container handling

Westports Holdings Berhad has announced a growth of 11% in container handling during the first six months of 2021, compared to the previous year, reporting 5.3 million TEU.

Westports prepares for terminal expansion in 2021

Malaysia’s Westports has disclosed that work on its MYR10 billion (US$2.4 billion) terminal expansion will begin in 2021.

This disclosure came with its third quarter results, which showed a 5.5% increase in cumulative net profit to MYR491 million (US$118.03 million), as throughput in the three months to September grew by 6% year-on-year to 2.93 million TEU. Cumulative throughput during the nine month period was 7.73 million TEU, down 4% on-year, due to the disruptions caused by Covid-19.

Covid-19 crisis slashes Westports volumes

A 17% decline in cargo volumes caused by the Covid-19 crisis has seen profits plunge 19% year-on-year at Malaysian terminal operator Westports during Q2 2020.

Westports is one of two terminal operators in Port Klang, Malaysia’s busiest container port. Overall, Westports’ Q2 profits fell MYR134.34 million (US$31.39 million) while volumes fell to 2.28 million TEU. Throughput in H1 2020 totalled 4.8 million TEU, down from 5.27 million TEU in H1 2019.
