By Mitsui OSK Lines

Mitsui OSK Lines held a ceremony on October 24 for the maiden port of call in Newcastle, Australia of the Shofu Maru , the world’s first coal carrier equipped with the Wind Challenger (a hard sail wind power propulsion system), which was delivered on October 7.

In a world-first, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) will bring a new type of hard sail equipped bulker to Newcastle, Australia later this year.

GHG savings

The single sail will produce enough propulsive force to save 5% of greenhouse gas emissions on the Japan-Australia route. However, the company notes that, in future, the multiple...

Shipping major MOL in successful, world-first, wind condition experiment

Mitsui OSK Lines of Japan has announced the success of a world-first demonstration with a MOL-owned experimental vessel, which was equipped with a Metro Weather Doppler LIDAR.

Doppler LIDAR systems can measure wind directly occurring around a vessel, by using a harmless infra-red laser that detects floating particles in the atmosphere, and wind forces can then be visualised. The feature gives “more accurate” advantages than weather forecasts from satellites, the company says.

Additionally, the...

High risk of rollovers in windy West

A cold front moving through the Desert Southwest will kick up high winds Tuesday, leading to an elevated risk of rollovers for truckers.

Winds began increasing Monday in a few areas, including Reno, Nevada, and South Lake Tahoe, California, where gusts came close to 50 mph. Winds will get stronger Tuesday.

The National Weather Service has issued wind advisories across a fairly large region covering southern Nevada, southeastern California, the southern Sierra Nevada, the San Joaquin and...
