Panama Canal sets freshwater fee, due to low water levels

With the changing rainfall patterns and the low water levels at Gatun Lake, Panama Canal announced that will adopt new measures to reduce the low water level’s impacts. Namely, ships will have to pay a freshwater fee, which will be set on force from 15 February.

Passing through the 5th driest year during the last 70 years, Panama Canal has received 20% lower rainfall in comparison to the all-time average.

The new fee will give a boost to the Canal’s water levels, as without it they are projected...
