VIDEO: Amogy’s NH3 Kraken sails world’s first carbon-free ammonia-powered demo trip

Brooklyn, N.Y.-headquartered ammonia to power pioneer Amogy Inc. today reported that the NH3 Kraken, a tugboat originally constructed in 1957, has completed its first voyage since being retrofitted with the company’s ammonia-to-electrical power solution, sailing on a tributary of the Hudson River, upstream from New York City.

Amogy sourced the vessel through Feeney Shipyard in Kingston, N.Y., in April of last year to test bed its technology and more on what was involved in its conversion to...

Amogy renames its ammonia powered tugboat NH3 Kraken

Brooklyn, N.Y.-headquartered ammonia to power pioneer Amogy Inc. is getting nearer to trialing the world’s first ammonia powered tugboat on a tributary of the Hudson River. In preparation for that event it has renamed the 1957-built tugboat that it is converting to ammonia powering as the NH3 Kraken.

The NH3 Kraken will be the world’s first carbon-free, ammonia-powered vessel of any kind, according to Amogy.

Amogy CEO Seonghoon Woo led the renaming ceremony, which included the symbolic purging of...

ClassNK issues world first AiP for ammonia fuel bunkering boom

ammonia fuel bunkering boom

ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for an ammonia fuel bunkering boom design jointly developed by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and TB Global Technologies Ltd (TBG). The AiP is the world’s first such certification for this kind of boom.

ABS releases industry-first ammonia-bunkering advisory

With ammonia-fueled and ammonia-ready tonnage already on order, ABS has released guidance focused on the bunkering of the fiel, the first such advisory for the industry. The ABS Ammonia Bunkering: Technical and Operational Advisory considers the aspects of bunkering ammonia as a fuel, providing the maritime industry with a better understanding of the challenges involved and how best to address them.

Due to its greenhouse gas emissions reduction potential, ammonia is widely considered a leading...

New MIT study points to public health challenges posed by ammonia as a marine fuel

There are no neat answers to maritime decarbonization — and making ammonia “green” won’t solve all the issues related to its use as a marine fuel. In a new study, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and elsewhere caution that burning ammonia for maritime fuel could worsen air quality further and lead to devastating public health impacts, unless it is adopted alongside strengthened emissions regulations.

Ammonia combustion generates nitrous...

Wärtsilä will supply systems for two more ammonia-fueled gas carriers

Ammonia doesn’t produce CO2, sulfur or particulate emissions when combusted, making it a prime candidate to be shipping’s new green fuel. There are currently no ammonia-fueled ships in operation, but Antwerp, Belgium, headquartered Exmar LPG BV hopes to be the first operator to have ships on the water burning the fuel: two ammonia-fueled gas carriers

In October last year, the company, a joint venture between Exmar and Seapeak (the former Teekay LNG), ordered what it says will be the first ever...

Fortescue Green Pioneer completes breakthrough ammonia dual fueled trials

Australian mining giant Fortescue is continuing its multi-faceted foray into green energy. With support from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), government agencies, research institutes, and industry partners, it has successfully completed propulsion and maneuverability trials of its Singapore-registered Fortescue Green Pioneer in the Port of Singapore. The trials were conducted using 6.4 cubic meters (4.4 tonnes) of liquid ammonia, in combination with diesel and hydrogenated...

Trafigura commits to ammonia fueling with newbuild order for four gas carriers

One of the world’s largest charterers and operators of ships, Trafigura, has signed a contract for four medium gas carriers (MGC) that will be capable of using low-carbon ammonia as a propulsion fuel when delivered. The vessels will be built at HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea.

The vessels will carry LPG or ammonia and the first ship will be delivered in 2027. Each vessel, when delivered, will be equipped with a dual-fuel low-carbon ammonia engine, supporting Trafigura’s commitment...
