Antwerp, Belgium, headquartered Euronav NV (NYSE: EURN & Euronext: EURN) reports that it is in a Joint Development Program (JDP) with the largest shipbuilder in the world, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and classification societies Lloyd’s Register and DNV, to help accelerate the development of dual fuel ammonia (NH3) fitted VLCC and Suezmax vessels. New DNV rules include “Fuel Ready”

In the latest updates to its rules for ship classification, DNV has released multiple new class notations to help the maritime meet the challenge of decarbonization challenge. The include “Fuel Ready,” a notation that gives shipowners the option to prepare for a later conversion to multiple different alternative fuel options, and “Gas fueled ammonia” for ammonia fueled vessels, to stay ahead of shipping’s ever tightening carbon reduction requirements.

BV releases “Ammonia-Prepared” class notation

Classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) has released an “Ammonia-Prepared” notation and has developed a rule note for ammonia as a marine fuel to support shipowners, designers, shipyards, and charterers in advancing their plans to use ammonia in a zero carbon future.

Ammonia-Prepared is applicable to newbuilds and certifies that a ship has been designed and constructed to be converted to use ammonia as fuel at a later date.

Eastern Pacific Shipping in MOU on methanol and ammonia fuel retrofits

Grieg teams with Wärtsilä to build green ammonia-fueled tanker

Two-thirds of shipowners have no decarbonization strategy, survey finds

Shipowners see ammonia and hydrogen as the most attractive fuel options for the long term, according to an ABS survey. Nearly 60 per cent of respondents said they viewed hydrogen and ammonia as the most attractive fuel choices in the long-term. However, the survey also indicated that nearly two thirds of owners currently have no decarbonization strategy in place.
