Nikola wants cheap electricity for Arizona hydrogen stations

Arizona’s largest utility wants state permission to sell cheap electricity to Nikola Corp. (NASDAQ: NKLA) so the startup electric truck maker can build hydrogen fuel stations for its Class 8 fuel cell trucks.

Massive amounts of electricity are required to make hydrogen through electrolysis. It is a process that breaks down water into oxygen and hydrogen gas. Nikola plans to break ground on its first hydrogen station between Arizona and California next year. It ultimately plans a network of 700...

Anheuser-Busch pits renewable natural gas-chugging trucks against climate change

Anheuser-Busch
  • Anheuser-Busch is transitioning 180 trucks to renewable natural gas (RNG).
  • RNG is gaining traction as a clean-burning diesel alternative even as emissions regulations increasingly favor electric trucks.

Ever since Anheuser-Busch launched a new sustainability initiative two years ago, the brewing company has pursued a decidedly fuel-agnostic approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its transportation and logistics division.

Among its commitments are an order for 800 hydrogen fuel...

Hydrogen fuel: linchpin of electric truck maker Nikola’s business

Nikola hydrogen fueling station

The focus on the stock price gyrations of electric truck startup Nikola Corp. (NASDAQ: NKLA) overlooks a major part of its business plan — making and selling hydrogen fuel for its fuel cell trucks and anyone who wants it.

“Hydrogen is a key to everything with Nikola,” says Executive Chairman Trevor Milton. “It’s our ability to separate ourselves from our competitors. “Nikola is not just a truck company. We’re really an energy technology company.

“We’ve spent more time on reducing the cost of...

Commentary: It’s time to keep truckers safer

The views expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of FreightWaves or its affiliates.

Truck drivers have always kept our economy moving. About 80% of all cargo in the United States is transported by trucks, and the trucking industry itself is responsible for roughly 6% of all full-time jobs in the country – employing about 3.5 million professional truck drivers. Without truckers, the American economy would grind to a halt.

Tesla Semi

The oft-delayed Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) battery-powered semi-truck is in the news again following a leaked internal memo from CEO Elon Musk saying the company needs to go “all out” to get the truck on the road.

The memo, first reported Wednesday by Reuters, doesn’t give a production date. The current expectation is 2021 after launch delays in 2019 and this year. Limited production is expected this year, Musk said on Tesla’s first-quarter earnings call.
