Peak season and port congestion surcharges spread to Asian tradelanes

Shipping lines have slapped a raft of peak season and port congestion surcharges on Asian tradelanes.
This week, Alphaliner said SCFI spot rates for Chinese exports were expected to keep rising, due to carriers’ peak season surcharges on “numerous routes or significantly higher FAK rates for December”.
For example, from 1 December, CMA CGM will introduce a peak season surcharge of $500 per teu from all Asian ports to Mediterranean and North …

Governments must back common rules for demurrage and detention fees

Concern about the widespread application of detention and demurrage charges has led the British International Freight Association to call for governments around the world to adopt the US Federal Maritime Commission’s position on the fees.
BIFA said it was joining a call from The International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) for governments to support the key considerations laid out by the FMC in its Final Rule on Demurrage and Detention, …

No respite for congested UK container ports as carriers take evasive action

Container shipments from Asia to the UK continue to be subject to “unprecedented” delays and significant additional costs.
“It’s as bad as you hear, possibly worse,” Ryan Clark director and co-owner of UK-based Westbound Logistics, told The Loadstar today.
“Space is still an issue, as are ever-increasing rates,” said Mr Clark,
“We are constantly finding ourselves apologising to customers. If it’s not rollings, space problems or rate increases, it’s a berthing delay or …

Double-whammy for shippers: record rates and surcharge surges

With shippers facing skyrocketing container freight rates and premium fees across main and secondary trades, ocean carriers are now pummelling their customers with a mass of equipment imbalance and intermodal surcharges.
The strategy of carriers is to get as many boxes back to Asia in the shortest possible time to take advantage of exceptionally strong demand and record high rates, and to do so it is hitting shippers with extra costs.

Australian stevedores getting richer, but customers seeing poorer service

Controversial terminal access charges have again helped Australia’s stevedores to increase revenue and profit margins, despite the largest volume drop in a decade.
The country’s four major terminal operators handled 7.57m teu during the financial year ending 30 June, down 4%, according to the Container stevedoring monitoring report 2019-20, published today by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
However, the report found industry revenue increased 2.8%, to A$1.42bn...

Colombo port congestion brings extra expense for Bangladeshi shippers

Feeder vessel operators to and from Chittagong and the hubs of Colombo, Singapore and Port Klang are to slap emergency cost recovery surcharges (ECRS) on outbound and inbound shipments to Bangladesh.
The moves comes amid acute congestion at the hubs, linked to pandemic-related reduced numbers of port workers,
Feeder vessels calling at Colombo are facing waits of up to five days and, in Singapore, more than two days to get a berth. …

As trade rebounds in Australia, war of words erupts over surcharges

Although trade with the Far East is booming, shipping line surcharges in Australia are “spiralling out of control” – and carriers blame port congestion.
Last week, Alphaliner highlighted a significant increase in cargo demand in Australia, coinciding with the country’s peak season.
“The rise is fuelled both by the Far East-Australia trade itself and by increased transhipment activity to and from other regions,” according to the analyst.
It said spot rates into Melbourne …

US exporters in revolt over the cost of changing earliest return dates

US agricultural exporters are demanding shipping lines end frequent changes to earliest return dates (ERD) – the earliest an export container can be delivered to the carrier – which can incur significant extra costs.
More than three-quarters of responding exporters reported that at least 5% of their shipments incurred more costs as a result of ERD changes, according to a survey conducted by the US Agriculture Transport Coalition (AgTC) and tech company …

Felixstowe brings back former chief Chris Lewis as lines introduce port surcharges

Ocean carriers are introducing port congestion surcharges for shippers using the UK’s biggest container port of Felixstowe, as owner Hutchison reappoints ex-CEO Chris Lewis in a bid to fix the issues.
It was confirmed to The Loadstar this morning that the industry veteran will take over on 1 November on an interim basis, tasked with a ‘Red Adair’ role designed to “stop the rot” at the UK’s so-called “premier container port”.

Australia’s crisis-hit shipping industry now providing a ‘third-world’ service

Australia’s shipping industry is in “disarray”,  according to angry forwarders and transport operators.
They claim Sydney’s Port Botany is providing a “third-world” service, while importers are being “held to ransom” by shipping line surcharges.
The crisis in Australian docks escalated this week with more industrial action planned for Brisbane, crammed storage areas for empty containers closing and work stoppages in Sydney have combined with bad weather, both local and typhoons in Asia, leading...
