‘Forwarders should not pay surcharges on boxes that are not clean or need repair’

Fiata has recommended forwarders don’t pay surcharges for containers that have not been cleaned or maintained, and that they charge shipping lines for any costs incurred as a result of poor quality boxes.
The fightback against container lines comes via a new “Best Practice” handbook, which argues that forwarders should apply more pressure on the lines, and ask for proof of maintenance when charged, rather than relying on “one-sided findings”.

Carriers defend new street turn charges shippers say are ‘insane’

Shipping lines have defended what shippers described as “insane” charges for ‘street turns’, claiming customers will ultimately save on costs.
Last week, shippers slammed the charges announced by ZIM, HMM, SM Lines and Maersk of between $40 and $75 for containers which are fully used in both directions.
However, a spokesperson for ZIM said: “ZIM is affording truckers of its cargo the option of street turn moves as this helps reducing congestion and emissions.
“The related charge …

Expecting demand boom, Samskip introduces pre-Brexit peak surcharge

European shortsea shipping line and multimodal operator Samskip is planning a pre-Brexit peak volume surcharge on shipments to the UK.
The company told customers it was already seeing increased demand for container services to the UK as an alternative to using ro-ro services through the ferry ports.
It added that demand was likely to outstrip available vessel capacity in the run-up to 29 March when the UK will leave the EU.
Chief commercial …

US shipper fury as container lines announce ‘insane’ street turn fees

US  agricultural shippers and forwarders have lashed out at “insane” and “appalling” “huge mistake” by shipping lines, which will impose a “street turns” fee next month.
Carriers including Zim and HMM have announced that, from February 4, they will impose charges of between $40 and $75 for containers which are fully used in both directions.
Round trips, or street turns, reduce congestion, emissions, demand for container and chassis supply and cut costs. But, …

Shippers claim carriers’ 2020 fuel surcharges are too costly and too early

Shippers remain unconvinced of the justification for the size of the surcharge ocean carriers are proposing to cover the cost of compliance with the IMO’s 2020 0.5% sulphur cap regulations.
One forwarder source told The Loadstar he had already had visits from two of carriers, but was “less than satisfied” with the basis for the new surcharges.
“And they are trying to introduce their new BAFs a year early, despite fuel prices falling at the moment,” …

Anger grows among UK hauliers as shipping lines enforce loading ‘surcharges’

Forwarders and shippers are trapped in a “self-perpetuating cycle of misery”, brought about by the collapse of the UK’s haulage sector, according to industry sources.
While container lines have made their haulage networks more visible in recent weeks, load-on and load-off charges continue to eat into customer pockets.
One forwarder, speaking to The Loadstar, demanded that carriers address these costs, which they describe as “nothing but a surcharge”.
“Customers are charged a lo-lo fee – …

Barge operators hit by new charges as Rhine water levels sink to new lows

Barge operators have been hit by water levels along the Rhine being at their lowest in almost a century, following a prolonged drought.
One source told The Loadstar the water at Bingen was so low “one could cross the German river by foot, something never seen before”.
The source added: “Duisburg has been out of reach for six days, and operators have cancelled charter shipments on many barges.
“Contargo alone moves approximately 50,000 containers a month on around …

Bugs – could be the biggest issue in container shipping since VGM

The Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF) has warned that the “biggest issue since VGM [container weighing]” is on the cards.
This week GSF met with the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) in Arizona. IPPC is investigating concerns that parasites and other invasive species are being spread globally on the outside of containers, contributing to the demise of local ecodiversity.
“It’s a big issue,” said James Hookham, secretary general of GSF. “There is heightened anxiety that …

Shippers are being ‘left in the dark’ as carriers look to recover IMO 2020 costs

There has been insufficient mainstream publicity on the IMO’s 2020 global emissions regulation for shipping, and a lack of transparency by container lines on their recovery strategies.
These are the worrying conclusions of a review by maritime consultant Alphaliner and a shipper survey by Drewry Supply Chain Advisors.
It has been estimated that the cost of compliance with the IMO’s 0.5% sulphur cap on fuel from 1 January 2020 could be a $15bn annual …
