DFDS announces 650 redundances and divisional revamp in bid to cut costs

Danish ferry operator DFDS announced yesterday that 650 jobs were set to be axed as part of DKr250m ($37.5m) cost-savings plan.
Two hundred staff based in Denmark would be among those let go, it added.
In a stock exchange statement, DFDS said the redundancies, along with the reorganisation of several of its operating divisions, would deliver DKr245m savings per year, although this year the savings would amount to DKr50-75m.
It said: “Industry sales …

Whitehall unveils financial support package for British ferry industry

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has announced financial support for the UK’s ferry sector, including £17m ($21m) for services between the mainland and Northern Ireland.
The move comes days after a dispute between P&O Ferries and the port of Liverpool owner, Peel Ports, over a reported unpaid bill of £600,000, which saw a ferry detained at the quay and led to fears of a breakdown of cross-Irish Sea freight capacity.
The …

DFDS lays up 12 of its 50 ferries as first-quarter profits decline

Danish ferry group DFDS has laid up around 20% of its capacity – 12 of its 50-strong fleet – in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
And it has revealed that it expects first-quarter profits to have fallen 10%, year on year.
In addition to closing two routes last month – Oslo-Copenhagen and Newcastle-Amsterdam, which were more reliant on passenger revenues – chief executive Torben Carlsen said some 25% of its cross-Channel departures …

Stena to make 150 ferry staff in UK and Ireland redundant and furlough 600

Ferry operator Stena Line has announced that it plans to furlough 600 employees with 150 redundancies across the UK and Ireland, due to the coronavirus crisis.
The company said furloughs and redundancies would hit shore-based and seafaring staff, following “a large decline in travel bookings and freight volumes” that has resulted in “reduction of the number of sailings on several routes; several vessels have also been taken out of service”.
The firm …

P&O Ferries lays off 1,100 staff as its passenger ferries go freight-only

UK transport unions have called on the government to offer financial support for the sector after P&O Ferries temporarily laid off around 1,100 workers last week.
The company said it was closing passenger services between the UK, Ireland and continental Europe and converting them to freight-only.
The staff would be “furloughed” into the government’s pay scheme whereby they will continue to receive 80% of their salary.
However, their union, the GMB, warned that …

UK north-east ports may be market share winners from Brexit

Last month’s announcement that Associated British Ports (ABP) is to invest a further £33m (US$39m) to upgrade Immingham Container Terminal, future-proofing the facility and extending its footprint, is the latest sign that the UK north-east will play an even greater role in post-Brexit logistics.
The news follows a period of continued growth in container volumes across the east coast deepwater ports, including Hull, Immingham and PD Ports-owned Teesport.
ABP, which owns four …

Fears of ‘no-deal’ Brexit road and port congestion growing among hauliers

Hauliers are growing increasingly concerned by the confusion surrounding Brexit as the potential for a no-deal scenario intensifies.
A Department for Exiting the EU consultation paper reportedly says the onus should be on hauliers to travel with correct documentation, should Operation Brock come into force after a no-deal Brexit.
Operation Brock would see coastbound lanes of the M20 at junctions 8 and 9 reserved for HGV traffic and the middle lane kept clear …
