FMCSA relaxes rules for truck driver-assist devices
Manufacturers of driver-assist technology for trucks will have an easier time getting their systems installed thanks to a petition by Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) and approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
An FMCSA final rule based on the petition, scheduled to be published Monday, increases the area on the interior of truck cab windshields where certain vehicle safety technology devices may be mounted. The rule also expands the FMCSA’s definition of “vehicle safety...

Newly independent Daimler Truck reports 20% group sales gain in 2021
Daimler Truck, the newly spun off stand-alone entity out from the shadow of Mercedes-Benz automobiles, reported Tuesday that groupwide sales rose 20% in 2021 compared with a year earlier. The gains came despite parts and semiconductor shortages that hampered production.
The group sales of 455,000 units outpaced 2020 results of 378,290 trucks and buses and hit volume targets at the group level and in segments.

SuperTruck II efficiency efforts could boost range for electric trucks
The final results won’t be known until the end of the year, but participants in the Department of Energy’s SuperTruck II program are racking up serious efficiency gains aimed at diesels that could ultimately help electric trucks go farther on a single charge.
The goals of SuperTruck II are 55% brake thermal efficiency (BTE) improvement for heavy-duty diesel engines and double the freight efficiency, as measured in miles per gallon multiplied by the freight tons carried.

Try, try again: Lighting defect prompts 3rd recall of Freightliner Custom Chassis
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling more than 25,000 Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. (FCCC) products, some for the third time, because of a faulty power distribution module affecting lighting.
FCCC isn’t sure how to fix the issue yet. A PDM unique to these chassis may experience cracked internal solder joints. Over time, that could lead to intermittent open circuits, which could prevent the rear marker, brake lights or left turn signal lights from functioning.
The issue affects eight FCCC...
Electric truck charging: Can infrastructure keep pace with demand?
Boosted by billions of dollars for electrification, the rapidly advancing market for battery-powered commercial trucks will soon learn whether there is enough juice to begin scaling a transformation from diesel to zero tailpipe emission electric transport.
It doesn’t look good.
“We’ve got to worry about supply and demand, and we’ve got to make sure that all these things come together, and that means like now. The race is on right now,” Britta Gross, managing director of the Carbon Free Mobility...

Truck order cancellations spike, but not for lack of demand
Anecdotal reports of Class 8 truck orders being canceled started gaining currency in October. Now, the statistics are bearing out the stories. Manufacturer-spiked orders for the past two months are the highest in more than a quarter of a century.
“Between this month’s cancellations and the restatement of October’s volume, we have to go all the way back to Q3 1995 to find a month, or two, to rival current cancellation volumes,” said Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst at ACT Research.
The...
