Ransomware attack on EDI provider highlights cyber risks in supply chain

A ransomware attack has targeted an electronic data interchange (EDI) provider that works with some of the largest shippers in North America and IBM’s supply chain network. The incident highlights the potential vulnerabilities of the most widely used type of technology that businesses use to communicate information about freight.

The CEO and owner of Canada-based Faxinating Solutions, Steve Hatajlo, disclosed the attack to FreightWaves after the Conti ransomware gang posted 15 files to a leak...

Commentary: Interoperability should be supply chain tech’s sole tech focus in 2021

The views expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of FreightWaves or its affiliates.

Interoperability is key to a connected supply chain of expert management and consistency, end-to-end visibility and optimization, and interoperability is the necessary goal in logistics technology due to one root cause: a single transportation management system is not suited to serve every party optimally.

If there were a system marketed to serve every party well,...

As disruptive technology continues to find its way into logistics stakeholders’ workflows, there is also a parallel transition within industry standards of businesses migrating from archaic technology platforms to contemporary alternatives. This includes the industry’s foremost and ubiquitous data transfer method — the electronic data interchange (EDI) — in which data is transferred electronically via a standardized format that allows one company to send information to another.

EDI dates back...

Do you know where your chassis are?

container chassis

Container chassis may be simple assets, but there is nothing simple about tracking their location throughout the U.S. supply chain.

Chassis providers and technology developers in recent years have chipped away at the challenge to electronically track usage of these assets with shippers, third-party logistics providers (3PLs), carriers, marine terminals and rail ramps.

“The problem is that there are many parties and systems involved when using chassis to dray containers,” Glenn Jones, global vice...

APIs bring added flexibility and savings to the shipping process

Changing technology can quickly put a transportation company on its back foot. However, by continually making investments in technology, a company can adapt to the times. That’s where today’s business leaders can differentiate themselves and bring new solutions to their customers.

Electronic data interchange (EDI) is one of those key solutions. EDI is a well-established technology that hundreds of thousands of businesses – and many in transportation – use every day. One drawback of EDI is...

Technology is changing the way freight brokerages operate

XPO incorporates AI and machine learning into brokerage

Digital brokerages have dominated headlines in recent years, but some old standbys continue to perform. And for some of them, like XPO Logistics (NYSE: XPO), the idea that digital brokerages represent a new way of moving freight masks the fact that many traditional brokerages have remained at the cutting edge, and even in the lead, of the digital revolution.

“We don’t think of ourselves as an incumbent broker,” Lou Amo, president of Freight Brokerage and Expedite at XPO Logistics, told...

Drayage update: The future of EDI (with video)

Bristlecone Vice President Vikram Kaul on video chat

Social, political and economic conditions at the national and global levels are changing at breakneck speed, and it is more important than ever to maintain clear lines of communication and information sharing across the logistics industry.

Electronic data interchange (EDI) may not be a brand new technology, but it is a prominent and effective way to keep track of transactions. EDI digitizes the paper trail involved in every transaction, significantly cutting down on errors.

IMO Calls for Electronic Data Interchange at Ports To Better Maritime Trade!

According to an IMO FAL Convention report, digitalization could facilitate quicker, better and more efficient cross border trade.

What is it?

when ships enter and leave port,
detailed and specific administrative information needs to be exchanged
with the authorities ashore. This used to mean paperwork.

But Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is quicker, better and more efficient for everybody – and EDI is a mandatory requirement (since April 2019) under the IMO’s International Convention on...
