The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) announced that Africa is ready to implement the global regulations concerning the air pollution by vessels, according to IMO’s MARPOL convention. Biofuel is not an option for Red Funnel ferries

Red Funnel, a UK ferry operator, has been testing the use of biofuel in its ferries for nine months, but the company commented that although biofuel can be burnt, supply and legislation issues mean that the fuel is not currently viable for them.

Matson starts installing scrubbers to meet 2020 sulphur cap

Honolulu-based ocean transportation company Matson, Inc. announced it has begun the installation of scrubbers on six vessels deployed in its Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express services, as part of its strategy to reduce fleet emissions in line with the IMO’s 2020 sulphur cap.

Three of the vessels will receive the new equipment in 2019 and the remaining three in 2020.

PSA Singapore collabs with EMA to improve port operations

Containerships reach 16% on scrubber uptake

According to Alphaliner, the amount of 16% of the global containership fleet by vessel count and 35.7% concerning capacity are already equipped with scrubbers as at end-May, in light of the approaching IMO sulphur cap regulations.

Zero emissions ferry sails from port of Barcelona

Grimaldi Lines has presented this week at the Port of Barcelona the ferry Cruise Roma that has incorporated a series of technological solutions aimed at reducing its environmental impact, making it the first ship zero emissions in port of the Mediterranean.
