Maersk Spot restriction an opportunity for smaller forwarders to grab market share

Rumours that Maersk will restrict some customers to spot bookings from 1 January could be “a big opportunity” for smaller forwarders to win business from their multinational competitors.
Sean Crook, director at Sydney-based forwarder Neolink, says Maersk and subsidiary Hamburg Süd have “definitely been pushing everyone to online bookings and/or FAK [freight all kinds] rates”.
“But I would say that is 95% of the market now,” he told The Loadstar.
“And while that …

Market Insight: Goodbye sea forwarders, says carefree Mærsk (but we can sell you air!)

The worst nightmare of a brilliant CFO who talked to me well before Covid-19, behind close doors four years ago – when still so many referred to the freight forwarders as the smart ones in the chain – has become reality.
“They own the assets”
And that mere thought, you could tell from his eyes and body language, sent shivers down his spine as his company’s margins – yes those of a …

Maersk forwarder clients left in limbo as carrier restricts them to Spot deals

Maersk’s forwarding and NVOCC customers are being targeted by competitor lines as the Danish carrier prepares to restrict their bookings to its online Maersk Spot platform next year.
Meanwhile, container spot rate indices, the bedrock for the Maersk platform, are bucking the usual slack season trend and holding steady at highly-elevated levels.
A UK-based NVOCC told The Loadstar this morning his Maersk rep had admitted he could no longer offer him a …

As it continues to drive its container line services towards a high majority of long-term contract business, Maersk has introduced six different types of agreement for the 2022 tender season.

Covid-19 wreaks havoc on China’s giant ports and Vietnam

The easing of Covid-19-related bottlenecks in China’s Yantian container port in June has been short-lived, as another outbreak has resulted in congestion again.

Sea-Intelligence, citing HMM’s terminal congestion reports, said that there has been “a marked worsening of conditions” in the last two weeks, after a very short improvement in early July.

Sea-Intelligence CEO, Alan Murphy said, “This worsening is driven by problems in Vietnam, Ningbo, and Shanghai. Unfortunately, the Vietnam issues are...

The 11,503TEU container ship, Cap San Antonio, crashed into a ferry pier in the Port of Santos in Brazil on 20 June. The floating berth, which was hit by the boxship “has apparently now sunk,” according to the container shipping analyst, Lars Jensen.

Hamburg Süd has confirmed that its vessel “has been involved in an incident in Santos” while departing the port complex in route to Paranagua, Brazil.

“At this time there have been no reports regarding physical injuries on or off the vessel or...

Containership charter rates have hit 13-year highs and shipowners are locking these in with carriers on three- and five-year charters, reports maritime gateway.

The consultant’s Charter Rate Index has reached its highest level in 13 years and it said that with the outlook bullish for owners, they would“retain the upper hand for some time”.

London broker source Comments

Indeed, one London broker source told The Loadstar he couldn’t remember seeing such a swing in the market in favour of the owner.
