Hapag-Lloyd CEO predicts early peak season for ocean shipping

Hapag-Lloyd’s annual report for 2023 and financial results for Q4 reveal exactly how challenging the ocean container market has been for the largest steamship lines. The report, which the German container ship line released Thursday, notes that Liner Shipping revenues dropped 48.5% to 17.7 billion euros ($19.2 billion) from 2022 to 2023, and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization fell by 77.1% to 4.4 billion euros over the same period.

Major lines’ margins in negative territory for first time after five years

Mainline operators’ operating profit margins fell into negative territory for the first time since 2018, due to losses in 4Q 2023, according to Alphaliner’s report.

Hapag-Lloyd announces Mediterranean-South America West Coast service updates

German ocean carrier Hapag-Lloyd has announced changes in its Mediterranean-South America West Coast (MSW) service, which will be effective from 20 March.

Hapag-Lloyd will introduce the port of Vigo in Spain to the MSW rotation as the initial port of call in the Mediterranean. Through this addition, the Hamburg-based line aims to offer expedited transit times to northern Spain and Portugal markets.

Hapag-Lloyd increases Asia container rates

German ocean carrier Hapag-Lloyd said its ocean tariff rates for Freight All Kinds (FAK) between Far East and North Europe & Mediterranean will increase.

The updated prices will apply for cargo transported in 20’ and 40’ dry containers, including high cube equipment, and reefer for sailings commencing on 1 April, as follows:

Carriers ‘undo’ rate hikes on India-US trades amid cargo volume pressure

Container carriers appear to have abandoned plans to hike freight rates on Indian trades to the United States, as they are facing a slump in cargo bookings.

The Supervisory Board of Hapag-Lloyd has decided to renew the contract of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rolf Habben Jansen, which runs until 31 March 2027, for five years, until 31 March 2029.

Hapag-Lloyd records third-highest group profit in history despite significant financial declines

German ocean carrier Hapag-Lloyd has reported revenues of US$19.4 billion and profit of US$3.2 billion in 2023, translating to massive year-on-year drops from US$36.4 billion and US$18 billion, respectively.
