MPC sees ‘significant upside’ for scrubber-linked charters

Owners of feeder vessels are set to benefit from “market disruption” ahead of IMO 2020, with a “significant upside” on charter rates for ships fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers).
Speaking during the MPC Container Ships Q3 earnings call, chief executive Constantin Baack said the company had concluded “favourable” long-term charters for six ships due to be fitted with scrubbers, and was talking with a number of other container lines about …

Containership scrapping gathers pace ahead of IMO 2020

In the last 30 days, 23 container vessels have been sold for scrap – nearly half the number sent to breakers’ yards in the past year.
According to data supplied by shipbroker Braemar ACM, so far this year 52 containerships, equating to 94,000 teu, have been sold for demolition, compared with 141, for 398,500 teu, in the same period last year.
A rebound in charter rates, prompted by a shortage of tonnage in the smaller-sized sectors …

Hapag-Lloyd jumps on the scrubber band wagon before they ‘sell out’

Hapag-Lloyd has belatedly joined the rush to install scrubber technology on its container vessels, ahead of the IMO 2020 0.5% sulphur cap.
Speaking during the carrier’s Capital Markets Day this week, chief operating officer, Anthony Firmin, said that the availability of exhaust gas cleaning systems was now extremely tight.
“If you wanted to order a scrubber today they are sold out,” he said.
He added that the total capacity for scrubber installation was …

2020 low sulphur regulations could be ‘the saviour’ of container shipping

The IMO’s 0.5% sulphur cap, to be imposed in January 2020, could be a “blessing in disguise” for shipping lines, should the regulatory fallout finally end the industry’s elusive search for supply and demand balance.
However, any benefits will not materialise without short-term pain, according to analysts speaking today at the Asia Logistics & Maritime Conference in Hong Kong.
“IMO 2020 could be very helpful in terms of supply,” said McKinsey & …

MPC gambles on scrubbers

Fast-growing Norwegian feeder vessel owner MPC Container Ships has placed firm orders for the installation of exhaust gas cleaning system scrubbers on five of its ships, with options on 50 more of its 68-strong fleet, reports Ship & Bunker.
MPC said its decision to invest in scrubber technology was in response to “significant interest from charterers”, who would otherwise need to use the more expensive low-sulphur fuel (LSFO) when the IMO’s 0.5% …

Seaspan still focused on container shipping, despite diversion into energy sector

Boxship lessor Seaspan Corporation says it remains “fully focused” on growing its non-operating containership-owning business, despite its recent decision to invest in the energy sector.
In a lengthy Q&A session, part of its third-quarter earnings call yesterday, management repeatedly denied that a potential $200m investment in the restructured Singapore-listed Swiber Group meant it was no longer interested in container shipping.
Chairman David Sokol said Seaspan would “continue to look at...

2020 ship fuel overhaul will cost Russian oil firms billions

Rules mandating cleaner shipping fuels – set to take effect from 2020 – will hit Russia’s wallet. The country is the world’s largest exporter of high-sulphur oil and, according to Bloomberg, it does not look prepared for the change. Unlike its competitors in Europe and the US, which have braced themselves and made necessary changes, Russian companies have reportedly done very little. One analyst said the country had no chance …

IMO looks set to introduce ban on ships carrying high-sulphur fuel

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will today decide whether to ban the carriage of high-sulphur fuels, The Loadstar has learned.
Amendments to Marpol Annex VI were approved in April, during the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 72), and would prohibit the carriage of  fuels that don’t comply with the IMO’s 2020 low-sulphur regulations.
The amendments are expected to be formally implemented at this week’s MEPC 73.
In effect, this means any vessel carrying high-sulphur...

OOCL announces bunker recovery surcharge to cover IMO 2020 compliance

OOCL plans to begin the switch to low-sulphur fuel for its fleet of around 100 container vessels during the second half of next year, in readiness for compliance with IMO 2020.
Unlike some of its peers, the carrier has made no reference to scrubber technology that would enable vessels to continue to burn cheaper heavy fuel oil (HFO) from 1 January 2020 when the 0.5% sulphur cap becomes law.
The Cosco subsidiary said it …

2020 sulphur fuel cap may spark a crisis for carriers that can’t recover the cost

The IMO’s 0.5% sulphur fuel cap will cause an “existential crisis” for container carriers, unless they can pass on the added bunker costs to shippers.
APL chief executive Nicolas Sartini said carriers had little choice but to opt for considerably more expensive low-sulphur fuel from January 2020, since the alternatives – using LNG or fitting ships with scrubbers – were not viable short-term solutions.
“We are 100% behind the regulation as it’s good …
