IAPH to present climate-related initiatives to IMO

Dr. Antonis Michail

Valencia, 18th October 2018

With the upcoming IMO MEPC73 meeting in London next week focussing on an action plan to reduce shipping-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) will present its climate-related work to the IMO in an open session, with member ports of Los Angeles , Rotterdam and Yokohama showcasing their initiatives.

IMO Identifying Barriers To Cutting Emissions Through Just-In-Time Operations

Identifying barriers to cuttingemissions_small

Reducing the amount of time ships spend waiting outside port and at anchor could significantly reduce ship emissions, according to studies carried out by members of the IMO GloMEEP Global Industry Alliance (GIA). Ships can spend hours or days waiting at anchor outside ports, but providing ships with regular updates about the availability of berths, especially in the last twelve hours prior to port arrival, can support significant reductions in ship and port emissions.

REMPEC, EMSA join forces for sustainable shipping in Mediterranean

At a meeting of the EU-funded SAFEMED IV project in Jordan, the IMO-administered pollution emergency response centre in the Mediterranean (REMPEC) has agreed to coordinate its 2019 technical assistance activities with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), to achieve a more sustainable shipping in the region.

Following presentations by project beneficiaries highlighting their technical assistance needs, EMSA agreed on project activities until the end of 2019. REMPEC will coordinate its own...

Watch: How ‘Just-in-Time’ concept can reduce ship emissions

The video explains the concept of ‘Just-In-Time’ arrival, developed by the IMO GloMEEP Global Industry Alliance to support low carbon shipping. Implementing “Just-In-Time” ship operations means ships receive information in advance so they can time their arrival at the berth.

Reducing the amount of time ships spend waiting outside port and at anchor could significantly reduce ship emissions, according to studies carried out by GIA members. Ships can spend hours or days waiting at anchor outside...

What are the costs of reducing GHG emissions in shipping?

Dr. Nishatabbas Rehmatulla from UCL Energy Institute, spoke to UK Chamber of Shipping’s ‘IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy Forum’, providing his expectations on what the GHG emissions reduction will be. Dr. Rehmatulla notes that decarbonising the shipping industry will be no more expensive than many other sectors of the economy.

As Dr. Nishatabbas Rehmatulla said, by enabling GHG reductions while also supporting growth in trade, high rates of operational carbon intensity reduction are needed, in the...

New software launched for IMO DCS compliance

ClassNK released the ‘ClassNK MRV Portal IMO DCS’, a software for reporting, monitoring and verifying shipping CO2 emissions according to the IMO DCS regulations that will come into effect in 2019.

Fuel consumption data reporting regulations aim to reduce GHG emissions. The IMO DCS regulations require all operating ships over 5,000GT to collect fuel consumption data and establish an annual fuel consumption data report to submit to their flag administration or recognized organization for...

2020 sulphur cap could impact Venezuelan economy

The upcoming 2020 sulphur cap may cause a new headache to Venezuela. Namely, the new regulation requires the use of cleaner marine fuels, something that may damage ‘Petroleos de Venezuela SA’, which is an exporter of high-sulphur fuel oil.

From January 1, 2020, ships will need to reduce their fuel’s sulphur content to 0.5%, according to IMO. This could reduce the demand for high sulphur fuel that PDVSA produces. In turn, this can reduce prices, while clean fuels’ prices will increase.

In fact,...

Signs of Global Action on the Horizon to Stem Fishing Deaths and Injuries

Jeremy Prain

Despite the estimated 24 million injuries and 24 000 mortalities every year on commercial fishing vessels worldwide, the fishing industry remains almost entirely unregulated and continues to be one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. Yet there are glimmers of hope that global action on fishing vessel safety is on the horizon, says marine law expert Jeremy Prain.

“While early attempts at an international convention on fishing safety foundered, the International Maritime Organization...
