Oil market uncertainty remains while fuel prices are stable

With Covid-19 rising in many large oil markets uncertainty about the future of oil’s fundamentals remains unusually high, according to  Marine Bunker Exchange (MABUX), who highlighted that “any change in this state of affairs depends on how the pandemic develops.”

The World Bunker Index MABUX continued its slight upward evolution for a week with the 380 HSFO index rose to US$297.65/mt, VLSFO added US$4.00 reaching at US$353 / mt, while MGO increased to US$418.46/mt.

EU ETS’ inclusion worries BIMCO

Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) is concerned that the inclusion of shipping in the European Union (EU) Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) will inhibit global action on reducing CO2 emissions.

Instead, BIMCO urges the EU to work with the international community at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to get a global market-based measure established, when the required technology is available, which would ensure the industry operates on a level playing field.

IMO website back to normal, while CMA CGM still tries to recover

International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) website has been fully restored since Friday, 2 October, according to IMO’s Twitter account, after the cyber attack on Wednesday, 30 September.

“A number of IMO’s web-based services became unavailable,” the IMO admitted in a statement and added that “The interruption of web-based services was caused by a sophisticated cyber-attack against the organization’s IT systems that overcame robust security measures in place.”

Cyber attacks challenge maritime industry with IMO confirming hacking attack

A cyber attack on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has shut down its website since Wednesday, 30 September, and left staff unable to access key materials for upcoming events.

In its latest post on Twitter, IMO confirmed that the interruption of service was caused by a cyber attack against its IT (Information Technology) systems.

An IMO source told Container News that some of the systems had now been restored, but the attack had shut down all of the IMO’s web connections.

Fuel prices still deter scrubber installations

Oil has been trading in a narrow range in the low US$40 more or less since July after the market began to worry that even with large supply cuts from OPEC+ and curtailments in the US, demand will not recover fast enough to draw down the record-high inventories that had built in the second quarter.

The global bunker market in turn has mirrored general trends of crude indexes, according to MABUX, whose World Bunker Index has risen slightly for a week.

Dubai lifts crew change restrictions

Dubai Maritime City Authority (DCMA) has announced that it will allow ship operators to facilitate crew changes in Dubai. The announcement came just days after 13 countries, including United Arab Emirates (UAE), signed a pledge to relax regulations.

According to the circular crew changes will be allowed “subject to compliance with the Dubai Health Authority, Covid-19 Guidelines and scheduled flights in the UAE”.

TS Lines eyes scrubbers as it posts higher earnings

TS Lines, the privately owned Hong Kong-Taiwanese intra-Asia carrier, is opting for scrubbers to manage the costs of complying with the International Maritime Organization’s global sulphur cap.
