A ‘freight first’ approach is need to beat road and rail congestion in the UK

A new report from UK Major Ports Group (UKMPG) has established what most container truckers and their customers know from everyday experience: that vast amounts of time are lost due to road congestion.
A Strategic Freight Network for the UK report by industry consultant MDS Transmodal found that an astonishing 50,000 HGV hours a day are wasted, amounting to 19m a year.
And combined, road and rail congestion costs the UK’s economy …

Video: Brexit breakdown and southern discomfort

“Chaos” is one lorry driver’s view of Brexit. This video from The Guardian follows said driver from a distribution centre to outer London to Dover. “I don’t think anyone realises how intertwined our economy is,” the driver says. He believes the UK is not self-sufficient, and speculates that some 80% of refrigerated trucks leave the UK empty and return full. While Brexiteer politician Jacob Rees-Mogg may claim customs procedures are …

Kuehne + Nagel bows out of ‘hopelessly overvalued’ Panalpina deal

DSV’s €3.5bn offer for Panalpina is a step too far for Kuehne + Nagel. Majority K+N shareholder Klaus-Michael Kuehne told the Handelszeitung paper, in rather a nice comment: “If the Danes absolutely want to buy a hopelessly overvalued Panalpina, then you can’t prevent it.” And according to Reuters he said its “operative potential” did not match its valuation.
However, that does not appear to be preventing Panalpina from seeking a higher …

Supply chain radar: Panalpina bond note on Tuesday by UBS? The Swiss 3PL is shopping the business…

Possible conflict of interest considerations aside – here is an initiation note by UBS on Panalpina (PAN), dated 23 January – there are reasons to be cheerful about the DSV + Panalpina affair.
Reading the signs
For the record, our sources have confirmed that UBS is involved, advising Panalpina on DSV’s Sfr4bn bid. A few investors have told me that it would be strange if UBS was not restricted from coverage, which …

DSV-Panalpina deal could get ‘messy’ as the offer is considered

A response to DSV’s Sfr170 per share bid for Panalpina is expected on Friday – but analysts and investors are increasingly asking who, exactly, will respond.
Last week’s news that DSV was looking to buy the Swiss 3PL triggered a flurry of talk about the deal, while Panalpina issued a simple statement saying it was considering the merits of the offer.
However, crucially, there has as yet been no response from the …

Swedish docker unions clash as ports lock out striking workers

Sweden’s container ports have been crippled by a mass walkout by dockers, following a row over union representation.
A spokesperson for the Swedish Harbour Workers’ Union told The Loadstar around 1,000 dockers were participating in three-hour strikes, but had been locked out for the whole day and evening.
“The employers’ organisation, Ports of Sweden, has escalated the conflict with massive lockouts,” said the spokesperson.
“For example, in Malmö, the strike today was 7am to 10am, and yet...

Other carriers should copy Maersk and spot check containers, says TT Club

Global shipping insurer TT Club has commended Maersk’s decision to begin random spot checks on containers and wants more carriers to follow its example.
Risk management director Peregrine Storrs-Fox told The Loadstar: “We are lobbying the IMO to make changes to its inspection programme, which despite the low number of governments partaking has made compelling finds.
“It is unclear why so few governments are participating, but we believe if commercial entities were allowed …

The pursuit of a single digital platform for shipping would be bad for all

Interoperable data standards are the way forward for digitising the shipping sector rather than a single, dominant, proprietary platform. According to this op-ed article in Splash 24/7, while the latter may sound utopian, the realities of human nature would get in the way, leaving the haves and the have-nots. Instead, the way forward would be to allow platforms to communicate with one another, based on a single set of data …
