Supply chain radar: Amazon vs container shipping lines – you’re kidding, right?

During the weekend I was rather entertained by AP Møller Mærsk subsidiary Twill’s latest affairs, and Amazon’s future dominance of the supply chain – a game that the Seattle-based behemoth would be crazy to play. And one that, given the signs and moves so far, it does not intend to play at all.
Those who suggest that the company led by star chief executive Jeff Bezos is likely to be a …

Felixstowe to provide more capacity for growing DFDS ro-ro traffic

The port of Felixstowe has announced that it is to increase its ro-ro capacity for ferry operator DFDS by some 40%.
The development could be seen to be preparation for a surge in demand for services outside the cross-Channel Dover Straits corridor post-Brexit, but a source at the port said it was already in its plans and the timing with Brexit was “largely coincidental”.
The UK’s largest container port will build a …

Carriers defend new street turn charges shippers say are ‘insane’

Shipping lines have defended what shippers described as “insane” charges for ‘street turns’, claiming customers will ultimately save on costs.
Last week, shippers slammed the charges announced by ZIM, HMM, SM Lines and Maersk of between $40 and $75 for containers which are fully used in both directions.
However, a spokesperson for ZIM said: “ZIM is affording truckers of its cargo the option of street turn moves as this helps reducing congestion and emissions.
“The related charge …

As automation advances, transport workers must be helped to develop new skills

Governments and industry must ensure access to the skills of the future as automation and artificial intelligence reshapes the transport sector, urges a new report.
More than 168 million people work in transport worldwide, with 87% making up the low- (15%) and medium- (72%) skilled workforce.
Jens-Uwe Schroder-Hinrichs, of the World Maritime University (WMU), said it would be these workers most affected by change.
However, he added: “The pace of introduction of these …

DSV’s “opening gambit” for Panalpina could trigger rival bids

DSV’s offer yesterday of CHF170 per share for Panalpina – thought to be an “opening gambit” – would create the third largest global freight forwarder by revenue, behind DHL and Kuehne & Nagel.
But analysts think DSV’s move, revealed last night by Loadstar Premium, could trigger a bidding war for the Swiss forwarder, with Kuehne + Nagel (K+N) most likely to show interest.
Panalpina became a more attractive target after an activist investor, Cevian, which holds a 12% share, succeeded in...

Supply chain radar: Panalpina takeover – here comes the bidding war

Klaus-Michael Kuehne is taking it personally, according to several market rumours, so I asked Mr Harper, a senior M&A market guru, what he made of the possibility of DSV losing out to Kuehne + Nagel in its pursuit for Panalpina.
When, in November, I wrote about a bidding war in the making for CEVA Logistics, (valued in the same ballpark as Panalpina, but with a fundamentally different capital structure) the part I …

Logistics industry urges UK to prevent disorderly Brexit but vows to “clear up the mess”

The logistics industry has called on the UK government to ensure continued free trade and no “disorderly” exit from the EU, after politicians last night rejected the Brexit deal put forward by prime minister Theresa May.
Ms May, who lost by 230 votes, now has just three days in which to come up with a plan B, while also fighting a vote of ‘no confidence’ in parliament.
Forwarders have today urged the government to avoid a no-deal …
