Founder Richard White’s long way to the top at WiseTech

It’s a slightly ‘puffy’ piece (and note the dig at DHL), but the Sydney Morning Herald has interviewed the billionaire founder of WiseTech. Originally from the music industry, Richard White founded the increasingly noticeable A$5bn software company in 1994, excited by the opportunities he could see in logistics – a sector he called an “unholy mess”.
The company is thinking big – revenues are expected to grow 50% this year – …

Truckers pour scorn on poorly-attended Manston post-Brexit traffic jam trial

Stress testing Manston Airfield’s ability to cater for truck congestion around Dover descended into farce today.
Less than half the number of expected lorries turned up – one a rubbish-collection truck.
Some 150 trucks were reportedly set to take part in the trial, however, that number plummeted to fewer than 80, with one source noting just 72 arrived.
“If another job turns up, that will take priority for drivers,” the source told The …

Against the odds: Put UPS and FedEx in your basket

Against the odds comes in two forms: a column, on merit when warranted, and a monthly excel calculator, which is updated around the beginning of each calendar month. It challenges common sell-side wisdom in financial markets that the future often has better events in store than the past. The vast majority of consensus estimates from analysts, often modelled against a company’s guidance, are a case in point.
In a typical bearish fashion, …

Will China seize Mombasa port if Kenya can’t pay back belt and road loans?

Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta has reportedly denied the prospect that China may be able to seize the east African nation’s “prized” port of Mombasa as compensation for unpaid debt linked to belt and road infrastructure projects. The South China Morning Post reports that the alarm caused has “again raised questions” about taking part in China’s massive infrastructure splurge. According to the report, Kenya ranks as the third most indebted African …

Seko Logistics moves swiftly along acquisition trail with two strategic buys

Acquisitive Seko Logistics says it is “ready to talk” to more potential partners, after announcing it had bought customs brokerage and compliance consultancy GoodShip International.
By acquiring Chicago-headquartered GoodShip, which caters to both air and ocean clients on transpacific eastbound cargo, Seko is continuing the expansion plan it announced last year.

Brexit: could Channel ports cope with ‘no deal’?

It has been much remarked in the past week that mainstream media knowledge of logistics is limited, to say the least. But here is a piece by the BBC on cross-Channel Brexit woes that covers the problems realistically. It quotes (pro-Brexit) forwarder Andrew Baxter from Europa Worldwide explaining how quickly delays will mount; it challenges Jacob Rees-Mogg’s argument that if Southampton can do a customs check in six seconds, why …

Furore over Brexit ferry contract at Ramsgate is ‘overblown nonsense’

“Brexit tribalism” is at the heart of the furore surrounding the UK government’s decision to award Seaborne Freight a contract for ro-ro services in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
A media storm  broke last week with news that the start-up had been awarded a £13.8m contract to provide ferry services into the port of Ramsgate.
One source close to the industry told The Loadstar: “It is overblown nonsense, in so far …
