Green methanol-powered feeder service launches at Port of Gothenburg

On Saturday 18 May, a new feeder service began regular calls at the Port of Gothenburg. This service is operated by Laura Maersk, the world’s first container ship powered by green methanol.

Laura Maersk is part of Maersk’s significant initiative to utilize renewable methanol as a ship fuel, marking the beginning of a fleet expansion with over 20 methanol-powered ships scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2027.

VIDEO: Maersk undocks first 16,000 TEU methanol-fueled containership

Maersk has released video showing the float out at Hyundai Heavy Industries of the first of its new series of 16,000 TEU methanol-fueled containerships. At the time it unveiled the design it said that it allows a 20% improved energy efficiency per transported container, when comparing to the industry average for vessels in this size.

EU Commission president names Maersk landmark methanol ship

The EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen gave the name to the world’s first methanol-enabled container vessel at a ceremony in Copenhagen, Denmark today (14 September).

The 2,100 TEU methanol boxship will carry the name Laura Mærsk with von der Leyen christening the vessel by breaking a champagne bottle over the bow. Besides the godmother, Maersk Chair Robert Uggla and Maersk Chief Executive Officer Vincent Clerc also spoke at the ceremony.

Disabled Laura Maersk headed to port

The Laura Maersk, disabled by a turbocharger breakdown, is expected to arrive in New York Harbor under tow at 11 a.m. Thursday.
