EU marks record in its LNG imports for 2019

According to the European Commission’s latest gas market report, the EU member states paid around 16.2 million euros for the 108 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas they imported last year. Specifically, EU managed to import the highest volume of LNG for 2019.

In fact, last year’s LNG imports marked a record of 48 billion cubic meters, up by 75% in comparison to 2018, as they were mainly boosted due to the lower prices and weaker demand in Asia.

Steel cutting for the world’s largest LNG ro-ro vessel

China-based Yantai CIMC Raffles Shipyard has cut the first steel for a new LNG-powered roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel ordered by Swedish shipping company Wallenius SOL.

Specifically, the vessel is planned to be delivered in August 2021, and is the world’s first RoRo ship to be both LNG fueled and have an ice class 1A Super.

It was designed by Wallenius Marine in collaboration with Danish shipbuilder Knud E. Hansen to handle the tough, sometimes Arctic, conditions in the Gulf of Bothnia.

Yamal LNG announces shipment of 30 million tons of LNG

Yamal LNG announced that it has shipped its thirtieth million ton of LNG since the launch of the project. The Arc7 ice-class tanker “Nikolay Yevgenov” loaded the 411th cargo as the project reached 30 million tons of LNG dispatched since the start-up of Train 1 in December 2017.

USCG approves Q-LNG’s bunkering vessels design

USCG recently gave its regulatory approval and design basis acceptance to the Quality Liquefied Natural Gas Transport (Q-LNG), for its two variants construction. Gaining this approval, the marine transportation company will have the ability to move forward with its construction plans.

President Lech Kaczyński LNG terminal to be expanded

Polskie LNG signed a contract for the extension of the existing LNG regasification installation with additional SCV (Submerged Combustion Vaporiser) regasification devices. As a result, the current regasification capacity of the President Lech Kaczyński LNG Terminal will be increased 50%.

The contract regards the design of the installation and assembly of LNG regasifier and cryogenic pumps. This investment aims to extend the functionality and technical capabilities of the terminal in Świnoujście.

Spain’s LNG bunkering operations triple during 2019

Ship operators conducted 195 LNG bunkering operations at Spanish ports in 2019, 135 more than in the previous year, according to Spanish authorities. More specifically, 81,704 cubic metres of LNG was supplied to ships during the year.

This increase continued in January 2020, as 35 operations supplied 12,055 cubic metres.

Oil major, Shell, launched its LNG Outlook for 2020, presenting the trends of 2019 concerning the liquefied natural gas demand and growth, highlighting that the year that passed was a record-year of LNG supply growth.

EIA: US natural gas production will continue growing

The Energy Information Administration recently issued its Annual Energy Outlook 2020 (AEO2020) highlighting that the total US dry gas production will continue growing until 2050, giving a boost to the US exports of natural gas to the shipping market globally.

LNG, bio and low-sulphur bunkers increase in Rotterdam

The demand for LNG, bio and low-sulphur bunkers has increased enormously in Rotterdam over the past year. In fact, overall sales in this largest European bunker port fell from 9.5 million m3 to 9 million m3.

In the last quarter of 2019, sales of low-sulphur bunker oil with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5% (VLSFO) increased enormously. In December, 62% of the fuel oil sold was VLSFO. Over the entire last quarter, 48% of the fuel oil sold was VLSFO.
