North Carolina awards nearly $11 million to freight rail projects
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded approximately $10.9 million in matching grants to the North Carolina Ports Authority and 13 short line railroads through the agency’s freight rail and rail crossing improvement program.
Fourteen projects received grants that will help fund upgrades to more than 12 miles of railroad track and 35 bridges in the state. Including the railroads’ investments, funding toward the projects is estimated at more than $21.7 million.

Carolinas offshore wind lease sale set for May
The Department of the Interior announced today that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed its environmental review and will hold a wind energy auction for two lease areas offshore the Carolinas on May 11.
The lease areas cover 110,091 acres in the Carolina Long Bay area that, if developed, could result in at least 1.3 gigawatts of offshore wind energy, enough to power nearly 500,000 homes.
