A subsea flowline separation the cause of SeaRose FPSO oil spill

It has been confirmed by the operating company, Husky Energy, that a separated subsea flow line connection has caused the oil spill in Newfoundland, Canada and operations at the SeaRose floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel will remain suspended after the extreme weather late last week.

On November 15, the company had shut in oil production at the White Rose field due to operational safety concerns resulting from rough weather. Namely, an oil spill occurred on Friday,...

Training aspires to enhance oil spill response in East Africa

In case of a marine oil spill, relevant government agencies in the affected region need to coordinate a response. This scenario was part of a training event on oil spill preparedness and response for countries in eastern Africa, that took place in Dar Es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, from 6 to 9 November.

The training gathered government agency representatives responsible for spill response. It gave emphasis on assessment and response to incidents where oil reaches the shoreline.

It also...

AUV built to detect oil spills

In September, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) demonstrated a new use for its long-range autonomous underwater vehicles (LRAUVs), detecting and tracking oil spills.

MBARI engineers outfitted an LRAUV with fluorometers that can detect oil in water and they simulated an oil spill using non-toxic, biodegradable dye.

Robots that can find oil spills under ice will be needed as ship traffic and oil exploration expands in the Arctic Ocean. The LRAUV used in these experiments will also...

Oil washed at French Riviera after ferry and container ship collision

After the collision of the ferry ‘Ulysse’ with the container ship ‘CSL Virginia’ oil had spilled along the Corsica, in France’s Riviera. Now, reports mention that thick oil has been washed up along the beaches, which volunteers try to get rid of with shovels and sacks.

The clean-up operation is occurring on beaches in Saint-Tropez and Ramatuelle. This is not the first time that Riviera is hit, as last year it faced forest fires, and now oil pollution, Roland Bruno, mayor of Ramatuelle, said.

Study: Oil dispersant was toxic for oysters after Deepwater Horizon spill

The oil dispersant that was used to clean up the oil after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill had likely toxic effects for oysters, according to Morris Animal Foundation-funded researchers at the University of Connecticut. The team determined this by comparing the low levels of toxicity of oil, the dispersant and a mixture of the two on Eastern oysters.

There’s an unfortunate trade-off to using dispersants like this. They may prevent giant oil spills from washing ashore and damaging wetlands, but...

First attempt to separate ferry and container ship unsuccessful

The ferry ‘Ulysses’, which collided with the container ship ‘CLS Virginia’, tried to maneuver in order to separate from the container ship. The ship put its engines back, but the situation did not change.

In the meantime, two ships ‘Jason’ and ‘Abeille Flanders’ used their pulling power to try to help the movement. However, nothing happened to separate the vessels.

Currently, experts appointed by the shipowners and from the Maritime Prefect are in the area, studying other ways to move the ships.
