Virtual Vehicle opens door to the future of fleet, driver experiences

In 2020, Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) announced it would embed Platform Science’s technology into vehicles at the factory level, a major advancement in the ability of fleets to reduce costs associated with the expensive installation of hardware to manage telematics and fleet- and driver-specific apps.

The two companies announced on Tuesday they are taking their relationship to the next level, with Virtual Vehicle — an open-access digital experience that allows fleets to easily install the...

Daimler establishes group focused on developing connectivity solutions

Freightliner truck on highway

As commercial vehicles and their associated systems go deeper into a connected world, the need to manage that overall connectivity in a thorough and cohesive way becomes more important. Daimler Trucks AG, parent company of Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), has recognized that fact and is responding by creating the Connectivity Services Group (CSG).

CSG will be based at DTNA’s headquarters in Portland, Oregon, and led by Sanjiv Khurana, currently head of digital vehicle solutions at DTNA.

Navistar opens its trucks to more telematics providers

International LoneStar truck

More fleets are demanding technology providers move to an open architecture world, and the same is true of truck manufacturers. The days of installing hardware to make telematics and other advanced technology systems operate are quickly becoming a thing of the past. The world of open architecture has arrived in trucking.

“The open platform concept seems to be getting quite a bit of traction,” Clem Driscoll, founder and principal of C.J. Driscoll & Associates, a technology consulting firm, told...

Open platforms opening up a world of opportunity for tech developers

Platform Science

Technology providers are hyperfocused on developing solutions and providing great user experiences for customers. What many of them are not as interested in is developing the hardware to support their software.

There are exceptions, of course, but many tech providers simply partner with a third party to develop the hardware so they can focus on their core mission. So, when a partner comes along that opens up that base hardware to any and all developers, the options for the end customer grow...

Innovative fleets taking advantage of open-platform technology

Schneider and Platform Science

For a large provider of trucking, intermodal and logistics services like Schneider (NYSE: SNDR) with tens of thousands of assets, the deployment of new technology can take months and the return on investment even longer. Trucks, trailers and containers are on the road hundreds of days a year, and routing any single unit to a facility capable of hardware installation is a complex logistical challenge. That’s why the “speed-to-value” calculation for technology deployment is so important.

Embracing an open-platform tech world

Platform Science FreightWaves LIVE demo

Anyone dropping $1,000 on a new iPhone expects it to perform many tasks. When the iPhone first launched, just a few apps were available. Today, there are tens of thousands, if not millions, of apps an iPhone user can download. And the vast majority of them are not produced by Apple. Spending that kind of money and only gaining access to a few apps is not what the consumer expects — or pays for.

That same philosophy is now permeating the world of business, and for truck owners and manufacturers,...
