Shortly after the Dutch Foundation Ocean Cleanup completed cleanup trials in the Pacific, the NGO conducted a meeting on Tuesday evening in Rotterdam to fully evaluate the current situation. A careful rundown of all tests was presented, and concerns and issues were brought to the table. After two hours of evaluation and discussion, it was concluded that System 001 shall continue to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

US EPA delays introduction of VGP 3.0 until March 2019

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has further delayed the release of its new Vessel General Permit (VGP 3.0), which was originally scheduled to be issued for comment in late 2017, but is now expected to be made available in March 2019 – with at least a 30-day comment period, according to a regulatory update by ABS.

Singapore conducts exercise to test oil spill readiness

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) conducted a multi-agency Joint Oil Spill Exercise (JOSE) to test and demonstrate Singapore’s readiness to respond to oil spills at sea. More than 250 personnel from 26 agencies participated in JOSE 2018.

During the exercise, agencies discussed operational and policy measures to deal with a major oil spill in Singapore waters, and a seaward deployment exercise scenario near Raffles reserved anchorage.

IEA: Ocean plastics possible to double by 2030

IEA published the report ‘The Future of Petrochemicals’ last week in which it analyses the industry. According to IEA, the industry will grow significantly over the next years, with plastics being its main constituent. This could double the amount of plastics in the sea by 2030.

Namely, the petrochemicals industry will be responsible for about 50% of the growth in world oil demand between 2018 and 2050, with plastics being the main factor constituent of this demand growth.

Ocean Cleanup gets green light to proceed to Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Ocean Cleanup announced that it has the ‘go’ to continue its journey to the the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and start cleaning plastics, after two weeks of tests in the Pacific.

US EPA requires Honolulu boatyard to reduce pollution
